Summary/Abstract: In the current geostrategic context, unconventional threats manifested in the form of hybrid conflicts bring into question the use of separate entities, called private military companies. The emergence and rapid development of private military companies (PMCs) and private security companies (PSCs) in the 1990s had the effect of reducing the strength of the armed forces after the Cold War and developing new types of conflicts that increased the demand for military force, expertise in asymmetric actions. The redefinition of military and security strategies and the restructuring of military forces at the level of Western states has led to the elimination and outsourcing of some sectors of action and services in this field of military activities. These have been complemented by various forms of specialized service provision by the entities created for this purpose, PMC and PSC. In conflict areas, theaters of operations and areas of government stability, such companies are an important component of the security sector. This article proposes an overview of the problems and challenges raised by PMC, presenting different typologies generated by the range of services and activities of private military entities. Some of the most controversial issues arising from the privatization of some military sectors concern, in particular, the implications of the use of PMCs in the battlefield, contractual ambiguities, ambiguous or poorly regulated legal status at state level, the impact of their activity on civil relations - military, accountability, transparency and human rights issues.
