Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to explore, with the methods of psychology, to what extent the concept of “national identity” still holds true nowadays and what its role will be in the future. To illustrate this, we propose a general overview of the current security environment, followed by a multi-layer analysis of the concept, introducing consecutive layers that give it consistency and define it. The analysis places “national identity” between two other concepts, “nationalism” and “multiculturalism”, and seeks to identify where it is found today, in the context of the major social and political changes that mark the 21st century. Last but not least, the article hopes to identify the link between “national identity” and “national security” and to propose some directions for action.
