Summary/Abstract: The study analyses the life and the career of a Hungarian born semi-aristocrat, economist and journalist, Judit Márffy-Mantuano (Judith Listowel), focusing on her activity in England. Due to her British husband, she lived in England from the beginning of the 1930’s and made a good number of interviews with prominent Hungarian (eg. Count Pál Teleki) and European politicians (eg. Benito Mussolini, Galeazzo Ciano, Winston S. Churchill), and kept in touch with pro-Hungarian British lobbyists (eg. Carlile Aylmer Macartney). As a writer she has published ten books. During her travels she managed to form an extensive personal network worldwide. Before WWII she had worked a lot in order to create a more balanced and positive reputation of the Horthy-regime in England. Her strong anti-Nazi and anticommunist attitude determined her position on the side of the pre-1945 moderate conservative pro- Western Hungarian elite. After WWII she became an active member of the Hungarian emigrants living in the United Kingdom. The main sources of the study are the writings of Judit Márffy-Mantuano, the British Foreign Office papers of The National Archives (TNA), the memoires of the time as well as the new historical literature of the subject. The author of the study emphasizes that Judit Márffy-Mantuano as mediator and back-bencher had crucial role in that the pro-British Hungarian political elite could even appear in the theatre of the pre-1945 British policy-making procedure.
