Summary/Abstract: The lifeway of the archaeologist Márton Roska (1880–1961) is strongly interwoven with the tragical fate of the 20th century Hungary. He became a private lecturer at the ‘Ferenc József’ University in Cluj/Kolozsvár as the pupil of the founder of the archaeological school of Cluj/Kolozsvár, Béla Pósta. After the Treaty of Trianon and after World War II he experienced the new Romanian administration two times, being forced to leave his homeland twice as the Romanian authorities took threatening action against him with the prospect of imprisonment, while during the Communism he was put in prison in Hungary. In this article I summed up the ‘returned’ Northern Transylvania period between 1940–1945, when Márton Roska tried to build his own archaeological school in Cluj/Kolozsvár. The focus of this paper is to introduce those colleagues (e.g. József Novák) and also pupils (e.g. György Szabó, Antal Pálfy) who played a key role in the foundation of the mentioned institute. It was not their fault but because of the circumstances that the Roska-period of the archaeological school of Cluj/ Kolozsvár could not fulfil its aspiration, however their effort can serve as an example for the posterity.
