Summary/Abstract: Eight countries of Central Europe are foreseen for full membership of the European Union (EU) in May 2004, and two South East European countries are slated for membership in 2007. If the enlargement process is to be successful, the new members of the EU will have to share the same values as the fifteen West European countries within the union. The EU would expect them to remain committed to free and fair elections, the rule of law and the development of an independent civil society. Drawing on the New Europe Barometer (NEB) and the Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (CCEB), this article analyses public support for democratic regime principles and performance within these ten post-communist countries. The article also includes an analysis of attitudes towards membership of the EU.
