Summary/Abstract: The article recalls a book in which the prominent German-British economist Ernst F. Schumacher was one of the first to highlight, in 1973, that an economic system based on a constant increase in consumption and a one-sided preference for private profit plays a key role in the significant destabilisation of the natural and climatic systems. Jan Keller compares Schumacher's proposals for addressing the related issues with the current EU Green Agreement for Europe. He notes that Schumacher's views are difficult to reconcile not only with the specific measures of the so-called Green Deal, but also with the overall philosophy of the European Union.
