Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes Gábor Devecseri’s composition Bikasirató (Mourning a Bull) using the theory of cultural memory as a point of departure, and relying on its three basic forms (linguistic, ritual, and pictorial). The bullfight described in the poem is a spectacle and a mass sensation, but also a ritual event. The ritual background is key to the analysis, as Bikasirató places bullfighting in the context of archaic rituals, ancient mysteries, and passion plays. The linguistic layers of cultural memory are manifested in the varied intertextual relations, in the liturgical formulas becoming commonplace in the mass event, in the archaisms and Latinisms of the language. On a pictorial level, the labyrinthine gallery and the shop window showing commercial objects become important, and in the gallery, images of violence flash in front of visitors.
