Summary/Abstract: The article develops the argument that clinical practice is not a purely specialized technical activity and that acting under high uncertainty clinicians take active part in the creation of meaning. This approach is contrasted to Giorgio Agamben’s study of epidemics and the tyranny of medicine, as well as Bruno Latour’s understanding of the practice of doctors as a specifi c form of translation. In order to illustrate the argument, the article situates clinical practice in the context of the discourse and action of global and national institutions, expert debates and public media coverage. The author builds on observations of Bulgarian clinical practice and the experience of doctors abroad.
