Summary/Abstract: Personality disorders represent diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to experts. For any serious and competent therapeutic work with clients with personality disorders it is necessary to know how to diagnose types of personality organizations and functioning level of personality. Similar or same clinical symptoms may be expression of the different underlying personality organization, and the nature of this ground significantly affects the therapeutic work. If the therapist do not recognize the level of personality organization which affects behavioral manifestations, then wrong diagnosis or treatment approaches can happen. In this paper will be presented and described classification of different personality organizations that was proposed by Otto Kernberg, with an emphasis on borderline personality organization. Furthermore, for better understanding of borderline experience, in this paper will be explained borderline personality functioning proposed by Divac & Svrakic and its differences to Kernberg’s personality organizations. This knowledge from object- relation theoreticians is in line with Gestalt approach, since as a therapist we work on the suffering relational patterns that the patient brings to the sessions and that are reactivated dramatically in the psychotherapeutic setting.
