Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the two editions of Alexander Fadeyev’s novel The Young Guard (1945, 1948), with the ideological arguments for the necessity of its rewriting. The accuracy of Fadeyev’s depiction of events was questioned, while the core of the entire matter was the lack of Stalinist myths: the myth of the great family, the relationship between father/mentor and son/apprentice, the motif of passing the baton and the Civil War cult. Although the cult of the Great Patriotic War (the title of World War II in the Soviet Union) was installed later, the after war period contributed to the beginning of the cult through numerous literary works and film adaptations.Fadeyev’s novel plays an important role, as it is symptomatic for the Soviet myth-making machine, based on a cycle of using real heroes and transforming them into role models. This ideological process served the Party in providing suitable figures in order to shape the mentality of Soviet citizens and contribute to unity throughout the vast territories of the Soviet Union.
