Summary/Abstract: Werner Bergengruen is considered a leading representative of German inner emigration, a literary-historical category that was widely discussed in the past but must be considered obsolete today. Bergengruen's poem "Die Hexe" (The Witch), written in 1943, serves the concept of the inner emigrant in equal measure, as its openly subversive motifs contribute to its infiltration, thus giving it considerable potential for resistance. With reference to Bergengruen's concept of the demonic, the poet’s mindset during the Third Reich is reconstructed and thus his poetic itinerary is traced.
