Investigation of The Possible Selves of Professional Chef Candidates Through Metaphor Analysis

Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to determine the possible selves of professional chef candidates regarding their professional life. For this purpose, metaphor interpretation was applied and metaphor analysis was used. The population of the study consists of students who enrolled in associate degree cookery and undergraduate gastronomy and culinary arts departments in universities in the TR21 Thrace Region. Each individual participating in the study was asked to produce a metaphor for the professional chefs they hoped to be in the future and feared to be,and to state their reasons. The data of the study were obtained from 235 students between October and December 2019. However, in the process of evaluating the data; 11 missing or incorrectly filled forms were eliminated and analyzes were carried out on 224 forms. As a result of the data obtained from the participants; it was determined that a total of 70 metaphors were produced, 32 for the hoped-for selves and 38 for the feared selves. These metaphors were gathered under certain categories by taking into account their common features.
