Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes political considerations on United Europe in the first half of 20th century. It reviews the prime traditions of thought on European unification and assesses which of them have been invoked in the project of United Europe that started during postwar period and triggered doubts about itself in the 21st century. The need for such analysis is based on a growing sense of crisis about European unification and the decline of popular support for it in European societies. Paradoxically, those tendencies are not followed by considerations of the foundations of Europe and by formulations of its idea. To begin such a discussion, the article suggests a return to the previous period of “European Crisis”. Within a methodological framework of historical-comparative analysis, the article judges selected visions of European unification by their relation to Nietzsche’s concept of “good europeans” and his diagnosis of the state of Europe after the “Death of God”.
