Summary/Abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne is still one of the most canonized nineteenth-century American writers. His work was inspired from and based on the history of his human ancestors and the New England of his own day. His strict Puritan discipline affected his life and literary career. A solitary person, he liked to read and contemplate in his room. These solitary years continued in school where he refused to participate in public speaking. When he met Sophia Peabody, his future wife, an artist, and painter, she managed to take him out of his “haunted chamber” into the world. The paper is meant to throw a glance at this writer’s life, as well as at his historical, personaland cultural background as a source of inspiration for his original dual vision of life in a strict Puritan age.
