Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to assess the effects of revitalization and functional diversification of public space in small towns. The assessment was made on the example of the market square in Chęciny ؘ– a town in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship with almost 4.5 thousand inhabitants. The source material was collected during field work. An inventory of objects located on the market square and types of business activities located in buildings along the market square were made, and interviews were conducted with employees of the town hall. The research has shown that the market square does not meet all the criteria of high-quality public space presented in literature, and the social factor was not taken into account in the revitalization process. Moreover, the market square in Chęciny is characterized by low functional diversification. In the structure of economic activity, trade is dominant, which is characteristic for the majority of small towns in Southern and Eastern Poland. Specialized services (e.g. financial, advertising, health, legal) are of marginal importance.
