Summary/Abstract: The present article aims to study the microtoponyms of Izhevsk in a wide historical and cultural context in order to consider the content of the Udmurt component in the city’s prehistory. Special attention is paid to the etymology of hydronyms (Иж, Карлутка, Подборенка), as well as the history of ­settlements (Русская Карлутка, Удмуртская Карлутка, Ягул, etc.) that existed within the modern urban territory. It focuses on description of an important cultural and natural object as the Park of Birch Grove and legends related to it. The research is based on the authors’ field materials, the written sources of the pre-revolutionary period, Internet resources’ information, and published research into the history of Izhevsk.
