Summary/Abstract: The paper addresses the question of pauses in the flow of speech caused by searching for words and phrases. The author indicates that, in colloquial Bulgarian, the extended vowels [ъ] and [a] are used for this purpose. It is shown that hesitation pauses are perceived as a negative phenomenon which could be counteracted through training in correct speech in early preschool years.
