Summary/Abstract: The article presents S. Skitnik's views on modern art, based on the concepts of decorativeness, style, subjectivity, primitivism, which he applied in his paintings and illustrations. His early works reflect the influence of the marvelous elements in fairy tales associated with the decorativeness of the Russian movement Mir Iskusstva (World of Arts). The illustrations from the 1920s accompanying T. Trayanov's Balgarski baladi (Bulgarian Ballads) testify to the connection with the Rodno izkustvo (Native Art) movement - the folklore-stylized figures, sustained in the spirit of primitivism, form the synthesis between the native and the modern. The illustrations for Marionetki (Puppets) by Ch. Mutafov demonstrate the principle of avant-garde synthesis, grotesque imagery and the influence of primitivism.
