Summary/Abstract: The complex phenomenon of tourism determines local and regional development. Tourism activity is most often perceived through the prism of complementarity with the basic areas of socio-economic life in a given area. Areas with a tourist function include those which, due to their values, tourist and communication infrastructure, are a destination for tourist traffic. The aim of the study is to classify and assess the diversity of Polish voivodeships in terms of the degree of development of the tourist function. The study used indicators of the development of the tourist function: Baretje-Defert, accommodation density, Schneider and Defert index. Based on their values, positions determining the degree of development of the tourist function in 16 voivodeships of Poland were established. The time range of the research, due to the availability of data used in the study, covers the years 2015 and 2019. The analysis was based on statistical information from the Central Statistical Office database.
