Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to outline the main developments that have marked the conceptions of the current role of the Western state in the last five decades, starting from the analysis of the stages of capitalism and the policies of crisis resolution. It subscribes to the thesis that the general shift imposed by the liberalization of international markets in goods and of capital flows associates a new paradigm of shaping state institutions capable of sustaining a new “market-conforming” approach to public policy, but that this approach is strongly inconsistent with the logic of dominant neoclassical liberalism in developed Western states. As such, the study indicates, in its first part, the political practices and beliefs that have proved themselves crucial to the governance trends prior to the global financial crisis of 2008-2010 and shows, in its second part, that these trends, which are questionable from the perspective of the neoclassical logic of the market economy and from that of the solution to the crisis, are maintained.
