Summary/Abstract: The case study, based on the visual sources preserved in Slovakia, deals with the relationship between the ideal and the real women´s clothing norms in the 1870s and the 1880s. In the 19th century, the ideal clothing standard was a novelty, established by the contribution of specialized magazines offering commented fashion drawings, helping not only to illustrate but even to initiate changes in fashion thanks to instructional descriptions. An image of fashion novelty was thus implemented with great help from textual information. The author clarifies the understanding and acceptance of the fashion ideal in society with contemporary photographs and women´s clothes. The real clothing fashion standard, despite its close relationship to the original idea of respective fashion novelty, existed in many variants. This is evidence of the fact that the realization of an ideal norm depends both on an understanding of its original idea and the capacity or the skill to create and to imitate it. At the level of social interaction a knowledge of the current canon defining the social occasion for a fashion form is essential. Knowledge of etiquette regulations, fashion rules and last, but not least, socialization together create the important basis for standard styles in clothing.
