Summary/Abstract: In this article the unique use of the verb чрьствити in one of the oldest Slavonic hymnographic collections, so called Iliya’s book dated to the end of the 11th century, is examined. On the basis of regular correspondences between Slavonic and Greek lexemes in the Slavonic translated literature it is argued that the reading чрьствить is a replacement of the original *чрьвитъ (= βαπτίζει) in the calqued meaning ‘submerge’. At the same time the variant presented in the Iliya’s book reflects the creative work of a scribe, and may be regarded as a good find which enriches the hymnographic text with the new semantic connotations, and therefore does certainly deserve much reflection in historical dictionaries.
