Summary/Abstract: The Old Church Slavonic has a specific position among other Slavonic languages. Its system of normative concepts preserves the linguistic situation of the historical phase before development of abstract conception of modality in the Slavonic languages. The Old Church Slavonic had to its disposal the constructions with the verb byti (to be) in 3rd person, with infinitive and subject in dative (aside from lexical means of modality). The Slavonic byti-construction with dativus cum infinitivo is very archaic, and it can be hypothetically presupposed that it is originally based on the Indo-European construction of the mihi-est type with the possessive meaning. The Old Church Slavonic constructions with dativus cum infinitivo nucleus imply semantic values of obligation, prohibition, inevitability, impossibility and certainty concerning a future event.
