Old Church Slavonic Metaphrastic Equivalents to Greek Expressions of Possibility and Necessity

Summary/Abstract: Modality, which presents the actions as factual or possible, is a universal category in most of the languages around the world. The main purpose of this article is a comparative description of formal and semantical structure of the lexical means for expressing finite and conditional modality in Old Church Slavonic and Greek. Linguistic material has been excerpted chiefly from the oldest Slavonic literary monuments, included in Slovník jazyka staroslovenského, with contextual parallels from the Greek texts. The inventory of formal means, which express necessity and possibility in Greek, is based on the dictionary of Walter Bauer (BDAG). The formal systems of lexical means for factuality and possibility in Greek and Old Church Slavonic are principally identical: expressed by non-personal modal verbs and modal-predicative structures. The Old Church Slavonic equivalents of Greek modal means of expression show formal instability.
