The Political Developments In Western Macedonia (April 1939 – April 1941)

Summary/Abstract: As consequence of the geopolitical constellation created in the Balkans after the occupation of Albania by Italy, in Western Macedonia grew the political tensions. And this, because the Yugoslav power, to achieve security, increased the measures of the political and social pressure on the population, whereas, on the other side, increased the distance of the population from the power. Such social and political circumstances enlarged the space for the increase of the activity of the various political groups with anti-Serbian and anti-Yugoslav inclination, but, also of the activity of the foreign secret agencies in the population of Western Macedonia. That’s why the population of Western Macedonia was almost totally indifferent even during the German occupation of April 1941, at a degree that this occupation was lived through by a part of this population, especially by the Albanian one, as liberation from the Serbian tyranny. The German and Italian occupation of Western Macedonia (1941-1944) opened a new episode of the history of this region. The inclusion of this part of the Albanians for the first time in the contemporary history, in the framework of an Albanian administration, created a broad basis and opened perspectives for an irresistible national and cultural development for the Albanians of these lands.
