Summary/Abstract: This article treats of the history of Bessarabian Tatars on the basis of Genoese, Bulgarian, Ottoman, Moldavian, and Russian sources. After recalling the centuries-old opposition between Russia and the nomadic invaders from Asia, the Author outlines the relations between the Tatars settled north of the mouths of the Danube and the neighbouring peoples, from the Middle Ages to the annexation of Bessarabia to the Russian Empire, in 1812. In particular, he presents and comments the convention whereby, in 1770, the Tatar communities of Bessarabia and Jedisan abandoned the Ottoman Empire and placed themselves under the protection of Russia. The signing of this treaty was a prelude to their relocation to the East by the Tsarist government, which, in this way, put an end, after five centuries, to the Tatar presence in that region.
