Summary/Abstract: The sharp decline in populations in the industrialized and urbanized parts of the world on the one hand, and the population explosion in developing countries on the other hand, are causing concerned politicians around the world to worry about their likely future development. Such worries are also a particular concern in the Soviet Union, since both of them are true of the trends mentioned above: the birth rate decline in in-dustrialized European regions is counterbalanced by birth rates in the Asian regions. As a result, the Russians are at risk of gradually losing their majority in the Soviet mul-tinational family. An important reason for the declining birth rate can be seen in the So-viet Union in the observed decay of the family, which is mainly in declining marriages, high divorce rates (see: Eastern Europe, 10/1977, S. A 593ff.) And the dislike of the Di-vorced to enter new marriages, manifested. The strengthening of the family in the Sovi-et Union is therefore also a much discussed current topic.
