Summary/Abstract: The main subject of the article is "The Illustrated Dictionary of Polish Language" by M. Arct as a work of popular science from the first half of the twentieth century. It briefly presents the author of the dictionary, the history of editions, its structure and character. Besides, opinions concerning the dictionary in contemporary linguistic literature are also included. The research part of the article is devoted to the methods of defining the names of plants and animals with regard to popular science properties. The analysis contains the most popular elements of definitions and takes notice of the meaning of illustrations in linguistic definitions. The analysis of the dictionary from the first half of the twentieth century has been based on contemporary meta-lexicographical and semantic theories.
