Summary/Abstract: Significant changes related to innovative trends in education have occurred in science education since 2000, new biology textbooks have been created, however the international PISA testing regularly brings unflattering results about the level of scientific literacy of our pupils. This paradox has led us to a more detailed view on science literacy and its various components, including scientific ideas of pupils. Our objective was to determine to what extent biology textbooks for the fifth grade of elementary school use the conceptual change strategies to change pupils´ preconceptions into scientific concepts. We found that of the 10 selected strategies four were not used at all, four were used to a minimal extent and two strategies had only a partial potential to contribute to the formation of scientific ideas of pupils, and to creation of basic pillars of scientific literacy. Insufficient use of the conceptual change strategies may create a space for misconceptions to arise in pupils.
