Summary/Abstract: During the Bulgarian Revival period dominant is the notion of art as mimesis, in conformity with the Renaissance principles of artistic depiction. In folk art (professional and non-professional) there are, however, spheres where the ancient symbolic thought takes prior position. It is these spheres where reciprocal shifts from imitating nature towards symbolism can be observed. These retro-manifestations are outlined in the article on the basis of examples of the tombstone anthropomorphic plastic forms.
