Summary/Abstract: What we aim at, in this paper, is a neutral account of certain characteristics of the spatial and temporal relative subordinate clauses (the so called locative relative clauses), in Romanian and in French – such as the choice of the relative element. Pursued at a syntactic as well as at a semantic level, this contrastive study allows nevertheless some generalisations, on one hand, about the specific features the systems of relative elements exhibit, in both languages, and, on the other, about the specific features of temporal connectives in French and in Romanian. The most delicate point under scrutiny being precisely the use of Romanian connectives unde (‘where’)/ când (‘when’) and of their French correspondents où / quand, in order to achieve solely temporal localisation.
