Summary/Abstract: The article offers an analysis of the special electoral procedures applied in Romania to ensure a better representation of national minorities in the local councils. Although this special mechanism has been introduced into the electoral law in order to compensate for the negative consequences of the increased electoral thresholds, it is unable to provide real help for the minorities. The domain of applicability of the rule is very limited, moreover, it may even take away seats from the minorities which they would have obtained, had they been treated just like the political parties. After the analysis of the current legislation, the article explores several alternatives for improving the system: a draft bill submitted by the minorities themselves, and certain other possibilities sketched by the author.
