Summary/Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to discover what were the main causes for the European unity in the Middle Ages and to find out what practically had initiated the perception of Europeans in that time as wholeness. It is known that Europe is more than just a geographical entity - Europe is a culture, civilization, shared way of life and an identity. With historical analysis and using various written record on this topic, this paper estimates the accuracy of the main hypothesis that the unity of the people of Europe in the middle ages was mainly caused by an outer military threat, where the author is reviewing three main periods of serious outer military threat for Europe.
