UNSUCCESSFUL ENDING OF THE USA MISSION IN ALBANIA IN 1946

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the efforts of the USA and Albania to re-establish diplomatic relations suspended (interrupted) in 1939, after Italian occupation of Albania, which unfortunately (bad fate for Albanians) could not be established. The American civilian mission withdrew from Albania after its staying there for almost 20 months. After November of 1946 and till 1991 there was no diplomatic relations between these two countries. The former historiography of the communist period held (considered) guilty the American Government. Documents picked in archives of USA, those of Albania and finally in the Russian archives prove that non establishment of diplomatic relations is a complex product of Albanian Government, under influence of Yugoslavs and Russians who acted “behind the curtains”, and international tense situation which coincided with the beginning of Cold War.
