In the article there has been reflection on the possibility of transfer of knowledge and the use of new forms of education for inhabitants of rural areas. The main goal of this article was to show the importance of knowledge and education as essential elements of rural development. The subject matter of knowledge and education is invariably connected here, because through efficient education systems we gather knowledge, which we can later process, complement and create its new resources. The article with the introduction consists of five parts. Initially, it was to analyze the concept and importance of knowledge and its diffusion for the development of rural population. Then, we investigated how the phenomenon of knowledge and education has been described in some documents of the EU, including rural areas. In the next part we examined the same issue, but in the perspective of selected documents at the national level (also with special emphasis on rural areas). In the fourth part we discussed some new forms of education and knowledge transfer feasible in rural areas. The final section presents modern information technologies possible to use in the process of education and knowledge transfer and provides examples of their use.

The article presents, with an example of four cities of various size, a phenomenon of a drop in water consumption by the city population in Poland. The paper draws on 1995-2012 official statistics. A significant decrease in household water consumption was observed, which refers to both the total water volume used by households as well as the average daily water consumption per resident. The article also determines the most essential factors affecting the amount of water consumed, out of which the price of water appears to be of the most significant one.

The article is devoted to the possibilities offered by the digital humanities as a critical reflective enterprise, for which a fundamental feature would a continued questioning of the status of computing and the tools it creates, and the way they are incorporated into the socio-cultural milieu (and produced within it). For this reason, it is important to take a closer look at the issue of media competence on the basis of contemporary teaching practices at various levels. I suggest a shift in focus from the assimilation of new tools (digital and network) to their production – not only to help create tools that better meet the needs of the humanities, but also to increase the level of reflection on the digital humanities

Only 15 years have passed since the first digital libraries were deployed, and only 20 or 30 since e-mail became available to us. It is a matter of fact that there is a significant, growing corpus of digital content available for scholarly research in the humanities, and this is going to change the conditions for our intellectual lives. After participating in numerous meetings, workshops and European Projects, we can offer a critical overview on the DH: taking some of the premises of Postcolonial Studies as a starting point, we propose denouncing the technical and commercial strategies developed by powerful consortia of companies and states from the anglophone and northern axis. Our aim is to point out that another kind of innovation is possible, based on users and social priorities, for the digital humanities, as well.

Network visualization is now becoming very popular research perspective and one of the key terms defining the contemporary media. Apparently, this is natural in a society that is increasingly being described by modern intellectuals and sociologists using the metaphor of the network. Technological networks, with the Internet and mobile phones at the forefront, now mediate many cultural, economic and social practices. Humanity today operates in an environment shaped by technological networks. This leads not only to the constitution of new communities and models of communication, but has also allowed modern researchers to gain access to huge amounts of data, digital traces left by users. The Internet is also becoming a huge archive for collecting and providing archival and historical cultural resources. This information can often not be understood or processed without the tools offered by new types of online research. In using the term “tool” I mean both theoretical and methodological solutions as well as specific technical ones.

In the article, the author touches on the problem of the rapid and dramatic expansion of information, drawing attention to the huge importance of organisation and self-awareness in science – especially in disciplines that are wide-ranging or interdisciplinary, both in traditional and new disciplines. What creates and binds disciplines is their language. The author uses the example of the cognitive sciences to demonstrate the need to remain attentive to this fact, and presents an exploratory study of a corpus of articles from Polish cognitive science journals conducted using the methods of the digital humanities (computerized statistical analysis) with the aim of searching for collocations and comparing the results with current knowledge within the discipline.

Studentification is a global phenomenon that has been prominent in urban geographical discourse since the large-scale expansion of higher education in the early 1990s. In many developed and developing world countries, expansion in student enrolment has outstripped the ability of institutions of higher learning to provide adequate accommodation. Similar trends have been recorded in South Africa. The task of this paper is to investigate studentification as experienced in one of South Africa's secondary cities. The paper draws attention to the economic, socio-cultural, and physical characteristics of this form of student housing on host locations. It is argued that studentification holds both positive and negative impacts for the host communities of Bloemfontein. Finally, it is suggested that studentification in South Africa requires greater research attention.

The system of pedestrian urban space is the primary source of information on the state of the space. Walking around a city, we are perceptually building in our mind its physiognomic silhouette, which becomes the basis for evaluating the attractiveness of a city. Unfortunately, pedestrian traffic is rarely the subject of careful planning and design. Usually it regulates itself or is a side-effect of building an extensive system of road communication. On the other hand, concepts of shaping this system as a primary one appear more and more often, and pedestrian space is seen as high priority public space. The purpose of the article was to evaluate qualitative evaluation methods determining the current state of pedestrian pathways in the town Giżycko. Valuing quality, as a part of the science called qualimetrics, refers to determining the quality of objects which are the product of human activities, designed to meet the needs of human beings. At the root, it is a science relating to the determination of the quality of market items, supporting the production management process. As space, particularly urbanized, is created by people to satisfy their needs, it was concluded that quality valuation methods may also be useful to assess the quality of space. The article focuses on the quality of pedestrian routes that are essential to the central part of Giżycko. For these routes, the current state of the features identified as key for their quality was investigated, and quality classes of the routes were determined by analysis. The procedure can be a tool supporting the planning and implementation of modernization and renovation works for the area of pedestrian communication, and thus the image of the city.

According to the opponents of Wikipedia it offers low-quality content and has led to a reduction in the level of literacy. However, studies show that Wikipedia is not inferior to Encyclopedia Britannica in terms of its substantive value, and in terms of content offers a much wider range. Meanwhile, Wikipedia outclasses Britannica in terms of social and geographical coverage because it can be accessed by those who never had a chance to touch a volume of Britannica. In a later section, we discuss the basic principles of the functioning of Wikipedia and its consequences, as well as problems, such as the high competencies necessary to properly use Wikipedia, the declining number of editors, the site’s gender gap and its geographical imbalance.
