Recepcja Jane Austen w polskojęzycznym Internecie na przykładzie stron internetowych poświęconych pisarce

Author(s): Ewa Szczepkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2019

The subject of the article is the reception of Jane Austen in the sphere of e-culture – its fragment connected to websites and discussion forums concerning the writer. The phenomenon of “Austen mania” starts in Poland mainly because of the popularity of the movies based on Jane Austen prose. These sites and forums played not only a popularizing role, spreading the knowledge about the writers’ biography, work, film adaptations, or Regency, but they also grouped the society of fans who felt the need of being close to the other readers of Austen and some virtual companion in a feminine sphere created by numerous, common interpretation of the behaviour of the heroes of her prose, and also fans’ creativity in the area of gadgets, Regency costumes and literary tourism. The other form of activity is fan fiction, slightly represented on the forums and sites, especially in the comparison to fan fiction around the work of Austen in the English-speaking circle. They are most frequently the translations from The Republic of Pemberley, not prepared, unfinished, fragmentated, or personal attempts of a romance kind, in a style of Harlequin literature and a sentimental tone.

Concept of the Camera at the Analogue – Digital Crossroads

Concept of the Camera at the Analogue – Digital Crossroads

Author(s): Zora Hudíková,Ladislav Halama / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The study examines and compares various interpretations of the term camera as a means of expression in the individual stages of the development of film sciences, as well as the overlap of the mentioned theoretical conceptsinto groundbreaking film pieces by relevant filmmakers. In addition to theoretical knowledge, based on aesthetic and philosophical concepts, it also monitors their practical crossovers into cinematographic and directorialpractice. The paper examines two basic periods in which the camera phenomenon developed – the period of classical film shooting on film stock, i.e. the period of analogue production and the period of digital production, which brought new theoretical knowledge into the development of the camera phenomenon. The study seeks toposition the phenomenon of the cinematographic camera, which lies at the crossroads of art and technology. The value of this concept in film theories oscillates between the recording device and the means of expression. Theauthors of theoretical conceptions lead a long-term ontological and semiological discourse on how tounderstand the phenomenon of the camera in film – whether the camera is more like a pen writing in a speciallanguage or it is to be understood as a specific writing type or style. In any case, thanks to light, its mechanical-optical-electronical equipment conveys a cut-out of reality, which is a testimony of a special form and content. Film theory poses many questions and answers some of them, thanks to the knowledge of camera significancein film production realization. The purpose of this article is to zoom into the theoretical and practical side of looking at the phenomenon of cinematographic camera.

Katynizm, a mowa nienawiści w środowisku dziennikarskim – analiza przypadku

Katynizm, a mowa nienawiści w środowisku dziennikarskim – analiza przypadku

Author(s): Zbigniew Werra / Language(s): Polish Issue: 52/2021

Katynizm as a system aimed at the destruction of the internal individual as well as society, uses various tools in the process of annihilation. One of them is undoubtedly the hate speech with its negation of the subject of the human person. It introduces disharmony to the internal area and violates the sense of security and decision-making. Hate speech as a tool of katynizm escalates the level of tension that does not recognize any ethical principles in the structure of social life.

The Role of the Global Capability Framework within the Strategic Communication Profession in an Emerging Post COVID-19 Context: A South African Perspective

The Role of the Global Capability Framework within the Strategic Communication Profession in an Emerging Post COVID-19 Context: A South African Perspective

Author(s): Dalien Rene Benecke,Clarissa Muir,Deidré Porthen,Helena Van Wyk,Neeltje M. Du Plessis / Language(s): English Issue: 27 (1)/2021

This paper presents the findings of a South African pilot study based on the Global Capability Framework (GCF) and aimed to explore the perceptions of senior Public Relations and Strategic Communication academics and industry leaders of the influence COVID-19 had on their personal capabilities to practice communication; determine their assumptions about the Global Capability Framework and its application within given contexts; and reflect on the future of the communication profession in South Africa. The focus was on the role of the individual Public Relations and Strategic Communication professional as leader and influencer in their respective context. The participants consisted of 10 senior academic and industry leaders who engaged in qualitative interviews. Data was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis as identified by Braun and Clarke (2006, p.82) which include “identifying, analysing, and reporting patterns [themes] within data.” The findings of this paper contribute to the current understanding of Strategic Communication practice and the influence that COVID-19 had on personal practice of both industry and academic participants. This pilot study revealed a limited awareness of the GCF but unequivocally confirmed the relevance and value of the framework and its contribution to both the academic and industry practice. Although many of the participants indicated an awareness of GCF, it was evident that a Strategic Communication mindset is required when the principles of the framework are applied within their respective contexts. Participants reflected on the various crises they encountered but one industry participant specifically reported on the need to implement a transformational approach to address the strategic change required to deal with such disruptive events. Both the academic and industry participants also highlighted the detrimental effects the pandemic had on the mental health of practitioners, academics and students. However, the adoption and effective use of technology in navigating the disruptive influence of COVID-19 was explicit in portraying its advantage to industry.

“Table Talk”: Defining Metadiscourse of Analog Games

“Table Talk”: Defining Metadiscourse of Analog Games

Author(s): Steven Dashiell / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

This paper discusses the communication in tabletop role-playing games that we call metadiscourse. Prior study of gaming and the act of play prove that the space is inherentlysocial. However, we speculate that, through metadiscourse, the social aspect of the tabletop role-playing game is central to group cohesion and perpetuation of the gaming subculture. Metadiscourse involves conversation not linked to the current game but could be cordial and relational, critical, or completely unrelated to the game. However, it is an informal conversation that would not occur if there was no game. In metadiscourse there are determinations of gaming capital, or elements of value. Participation in metadiscourse allows an individual to feel included in the game and gaming subculture. However, metadiscourse demonstrates a level of gaming capital through situatedness and affordances that can act as a gatekeeping function for individuals.

Localizarea, Un Proces Complex Al Adaptării

Localizarea, Un Proces Complex Al Adaptării

Author(s): Mirel Anghel / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

This article aims at presenting some of the main characteristics of the localization process across cultures, taking into consideration the cultural dimensions devised by Geert Hofstede in 1980. The process of localization requires extensive knowledge about certain societies where we want to launch new products and services. Localization is not just a simple conversion of units of measurement, date formats and symbols. It involves a complex analysis of the target society and a set of values which are highly esteemed by that society. We also present examples of university websites which pertain to different countries from Asia and Europe, thus underlining the main points of the localization process in which we have to take into account the specifics of different cultures.

Frequency of Adjectives in Male and Female Speech in the Contemporary Television Drama Series “Homeland”:

Frequency of Adjectives in Male and Female Speech in the Contemporary Television Drama Series “Homeland”:

Author(s): Marian Żmigrodzki / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The paper addresses issues related to language and gender, and discusses research on the frequency of adjectives in language of male and female characters in a TV drama series “Homeland”. The empirical part of the study uses as its theoretical background the classic works in the field (Lakoff 1975; Butler 1990; Meyerhoff 2006), which identify gender specific language features and define factors that determine male-female language differences. The research was conducted manually, with a limited support of electronic tools, on a personally created language corpus consisting of dialogue lines from the TV show. The results clearly show that the frequency of adjectives in female speech in the context of the TV series is higher than in male speech in the analyzed corpus.

Ephemeral mimetics:

Ephemeral mimetics:

Author(s): Sara Martínez-Cardama,Fátima García-López / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted a crisis with consequences for public health, but also with economic, social and cultural implications that have affected all layers of society to a greater or lesser extent. Communication has been impacted by the immediacy and virality of messages and misinformation has galloped across social platforms. Against this backdrop, memes have emerged as a powerful means to channel citizen sentiment. During the Covid-19 crisis, social sciences and, in particular, the study of social interaction through digital platforms has played a significant role. A study of these digital objects is essential to understanding social network-based communication during the pandemic. The qualitative research reported here analyses the role of memes in communication on Covid-19, studies their development and defends their status as one of this generation’s cultural artefacts that, as such, merits preservation. Meme evolution is studied using Kübler-Ross’ (1969) stages of grief, which has been applied in a number of contexts involving psychological change. A corpus of 980 memes was analysed according to iconographic and sociological criteria. Studying memes in those terms both brings information on the evolution of citizens’ concerns to light and proves useful to identify the trends present in social media communication around the pandemic. The challenges to be faced in meme preservation are defined, along with the ways in which heritage institutions should ensure the conservation of these cultural objects, which mirror early twentyfirst century communication and world views and, in this case, provide specific insight into one of the most significant historical circumstances of recent decades.

Commentary piece

Commentary piece

Author(s): Villy Tsakona / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

This commentary piece offers some preliminary thoughts concerning Greek memes produced since COVID-19 disease arrived at Greece at the end of February 2020 through identifying an analogy between the sociopolitical conditions in Greece-under-lockdown and Orwell’s Oceania in his 1984 novel. It is specifically argued that such texts constitute political humour commenting on the abrupt, yet pervasive changes attested due to state measures against the spread of COVID-19 disease. To this end, memes collected from social media are discussed and interpreted in comparison with extracts from Orwell’s novel to point to striking similarities between the 1984 sociopolitical context and the Greek one. It is, however, suggested that there is a significant difference between the two contexts: in Orwell’s dystopia, humour seems to have no place at all; on the contrary, humour thrived in Greece-under-lockdown, especially among participants in the social media, in the form of rapidly created and disseminated memes. Memory (a central notion in Orwell’s novel) emerges as a crucial factor for the production of such humour in contemporary Greece and for its absence from Orwell’s Oceania.

‘She is like a Yakshini':

Author(s): Ying Cao,Chong Han,Xiangdong Liu,Adrian Hale / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

This paper looks at the importance of aggressive humour in the discursive construction of a ‘Yakshini’ character in a popular Chinese sitcom, Ipartment. The exaggerated, aggressive nature of such a stereotypical character undermines traditional cultural norms of Chinese femininity. Such characterisation of a heroine through aggressive humour in a popular sitcom reflects the fact that empowering women has become (or is becoming) more acceptable in contemporary China.

LIPSA POLITICILOR INFORMAȚIONALE ÎN RAPORT CU REGIUNEA TRANSNISTREANĂ – FACTOR DE RISC ASUPRA SECURITĂȚII INFORMAȚIONALE A REPUBLICII MOLDOVA

Author(s): Ivan Țurcan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2021

The subject in field of public information policies in the context of the unresolved conflict in the Republic of Moldova is important not only locally, regionally, as well as for the entire Moldovan information space, perhaps even regionally, for example, in the context of conflicts in Ukraine. The importance of this topic is greater as the spectrum of hybrid challenges in the 21st century has increased significantly, and the mass media is becoming a valuable topic in these confrontations. Thus, in the light of those described, the article highlights the de facto situation in the Transnistrian region on the mass media component, the vulnerabilities present in this regard for the rest of the Republic of Moldova and the legal perspectives for intervention in the field. The article can be useful in developing sectoral public policies, improving the legal framework for expanding a single informational space, as well as those interested in the Transnistrian subject.

Postprawdziwa polityka klimatyczna Donalda Trumpa

Author(s): Adam Płachciak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

The aim of the article is to present Donald Trump’s climate denialism as an example of political post-truth, where the facts are of less importance than referring to emotions and personal convictions. Trump’s convictions on ‘global warming’, particularly in their media popularization, played a key role in the production and distribution of political discourse by the former American president and the way he expressed his power. The research perspective is essentially developed on the basis of critical discourse analysis.

Czy (i komu) potrzebne są czasopisma naukowe? Kontekst nauk społecznych

Czy (i komu) potrzebne są czasopisma naukowe? Kontekst nauk społecznych

Author(s): Jerzy Marian Brzeziński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The article raises a few issues – essential in the author’s view – which are related to the place of scientific journals in the system of science, with special emphasis laid on the publishing practice of scholars representing the social sciences. The practice of overusing bibliometric indices with which individual journals are assigned – especially in evaluation procedures – is taken into account and subjected to criticism. The author strongly supports DORA (the declaration on research assessment) when it comes to the common practice of replacing peer review with a simpler and more effective procedure of using bibliometric indices (also to assess the performance of individual scholars). When employers (for instance, universities) exert pressure on scientists to obtain points from publications, this results in a number of pathological phenomena: the emergence of predatory journals and the appearance of ‘virtual’ teams of authors only pretending to collaborate. The article ends with the author's recommendations for young scientists on how to design their careers – including how to publish wisely in scientific journals.

Aktualne problemy czasopism naukowych w Polsce

Aktualne problemy czasopism naukowych w Polsce

Author(s): Maciej Żukowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

Scientific journals are and probably will remain the key research communication channel. In the social sciences and humanities, journals will not eliminate or marginalize books (monographs). Although measuring research results by means of lists and points is probably necessary, attempts should be made to at least counteract the downsides of running after points and impactitis. Publishing in prestigious international journals in English is important for participation in international research, but good journals in Polish should also be supported, especially those focused on the social sciences and humanities and addressing issues associated with culture and society. There are no strong arguments for the bureaucratic assigning of scientific disciplines to journals on the Minister’s list, and multidisciplinary journals should be supported. Open access to scientific journals has advantages, but it raises concerns about equal access of authors from poorer countries, and about quality. The joint efforts of researchers, publishers and governments are needed to fight against the pathology of predatory journals. Scientific journals in the field of the social sciences and humanities could accept shorter, concise texts, taking the role of books in these sciences into account.

Polskie wykazy czasopism naukowych – podsumowanie dotychczasowych doświadczeń z perspektywy czasopism prawniczych

Author(s): Grzegorz Wierczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The first part of the article discusses the rules regulating the creation of the official list of scientific journals in Poland. The author concludes that these rules have many flaws. Among the de lege ferenda conclusions, the author mentions: (i) the list cannot be applied retroactively, it should only have effects for the future; (ii) decisions concerning inclusion on the list and awarding points should be justified, and these justifications should be publicly available; (iii) decisions concerning inclusion on the list of scientific journals and the awarding of points to scientific journals should be subject to judicial control; (iv) the list of scientific journals should not be prepared by the ministry, but by an independent scientific agency; (v) the list should be fully developed on the basis of a unified, transparent methodology, in which the essential element of the evaluation is the analysis of journal citations. The second part of the article discusses the scientific databases used to create rankings of scientific journals. The author points out that in relation to European legal journals, the Web of Science and Scopus databases include content that is too limited to be properly used for this purpose. The author suggests taking into account the citations from the Google Scholar database to evaluate European scientific legal journals.
