„Lutrzy” i „dajczkatolicy”. Kreacja wizerunku Niemców na łamach polskiej prasy Prus Zachodnich na przełomie XIX i XX w. – w obliczu łączenia przynależności narodowej z wyznaniową

Author(s): Paweł ŚPICA / Language(s): Polish Issue: 24/2015

The development of modern nationalism and anti-Polish policy of the Prussian authorities contributed to the deterioration of Polish-German relations in West Prussia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Religious differences also did not favor non-confrontational coexistence of both nations. At that time an important role in shaping national consciousness of Pomeranian Poles played a Polish newspaper. Press repeatedly served as educational. On the pages of Polish newspaper, journalists were informing readers about the German policy and ways of fighting from germanization. The journalists also were presenting themselves as defenders of the Polish language and the Catholic faith. As a result, they were showing the Germans through the prism of national and religious differences. On the pages of the Polish press Germans Protestants and Germans Catholics were shown otherwise. This article treats about how the Polish journalists were shaping the imagination of Poles about the German Protestants and Catholics in West Prussia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in the face of intensifying conflict based on nationality.

Society digitization is influenced by new information and communication technologies. It is one of the key components of changes in the society. The essential changes in the society it brings can be called revolutionary, as stated by P. Kyselka (2015). Digital technologies, including the Internet, become everyday part of people´s lives in any role, and thus even for a consumer-customer who buys and consumes products to meet their specific needs and to regenerate physical and mental strength. What are the possibilities in the digital environment for customer-consumers with certain medical restrictions to maintain the quality of their lives? Is the use of the Internet in the purchasing decision process for consumers with specific needs determined by certain medical restrictions (gluten-free diet) a benefit? These questions are examined and analyzed in the contribution, including suggestions for improving the current state in the digital environment.

Sociální média, virtuální společenství a proměny politiky: Poznámky k sociálním studiím internetu

Sociální média, virtuální společenství a proměny politiky: Poznámky k sociálním studiím internetu

Author(s): Karel B. Müller / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2013

Výzkum sociálních a politických možností a důsledků rozvoje internetu obsadil dnes čelní místo v sociálně vědní agendě.

It is not new at all now when an educational institution or a university uses new, modern forms of education, including e-learning. A lot of institutions implement e-learning without teaching tutors in advance to use it in the right way. Thus it can happen that teachers reject such a kind of tuition and do not use it meaningfully. Therefore it is better to use a method of voluntary acceptance.

Author(s): Veselina Kachakova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

The text examines how the integration of technology and artificial intelligence into school education fundamentally alters classical notions of the role and functions of education held by representatives of various scientific disciplines. The literature review is structured around the following research questions: 1) How do technology (including artificial intelligence) reshape the sociologist Emile Durkheim's thesis on the authority of the teacher and their role in the socialization of students?; 2) How does the presence of "superintelligent" technology relate to psychologist Abraham Maslow's theory of motivation and self-actualization?; and 3) How do technology weaken the role of school education in addressing societal inequalities – an idea, advocated by the philosopher John Dewey and his daughter and educator Evelyn Dewey? The report aims to serve as a starting point for future interdisciplinary empirical research in school education, with the goal of finding comprehensive and effective solutions for how technology and artificial intelligence can positively impact school education.

The contribution is paid to the up-to-date topic needs to mitigate the impacts of economic and financial crisis. The European Union and the Slovak Republic responded to the economic crisis by adopting the necessary measures. One of these instruments are the structural funds as a part of the cohesion policy, while the government of the Slovak Republic adopted a measure aimed at maximizing the utilization of finance from the structural funds, in the programming period 2007-2013. The above situation shows a need for communication, which responds to changed conditions and helps to soften the impact, and that will influence the implementation of the objectives of the measures taken.

Author(s): Gergana Fyrkova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Using commercials in teaching business German opens up great opportunities for an attractive and pragmatic approach to a foreign language. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, advertising is an ideal format for deepening linguistic and communicative competences and for acquiring specialized knowledge not only about economics, but also about the society, the culture and the mentality of the native speakers. Commercials can arouse curiosity about the target language country and its inhabitants, they motivate, they evoke emotions, they create opportunities for speaking and writing, and for analysing cultural specificities. They are very interesting and productive for knowledge transfer because they link linguistic, aesthetic, social and economic topics. A number of possibilities for the didacticisation of advertising arise from its narrative character and its position on the border between art and economy.

Metajournalistic discourse on media freedom in online media in Serbia

Metajournalistic discourse on media freedom in online media in Serbia

Author(s): Marta S. Mitrović,Marija Z. Vujović,Tatjana M. Vulić / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 4/2023

Metajournalistic discourse is a broad field of research, and its analysis provides insight into how different journalistic concepts are defined and legitimised within the profession. However, in addition to journalistic actors, numerous non-media actors also participate in the construction of metadiscourse in journalism. This paper analyses metajournalistic discourse (Carlson, 2016) on media freedom, with the aim of answering the following research questions: “Which actors build metadiscourse around the concept of media freedom in Serbia?” and “What is the tone of this metadiscourse?” As many as 674 texts collected during 2021 and 2022 from 10 online media outlets were analysed. The results of this analysis show that the metadiscourse on media freedom is mostly built by non-journalistic actors, while the most common tone of that discourse is critical. By cross-referencing the actors with the tone of discourse, it was concluded that a critical tone prevailed among all actors, both journalists and non-journalists, with the exception of state officials. They are also the only actors with a positive tone of discourse.

What does the Internet tell the linguist about American democracy?

What does the Internet tell the linguist about American democracy?

Author(s): Alena Rudenka / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

This article presents the results of a study of the cultural concept of democracy in American English, mainly in its contemporary usage (20th and 21st centuries). It investigates data from online dictionaries and other sources on the semantics of the lexemes democracy, democrat, democratic, and their systemic characteristics, as well as data from an associative dictionary. Examples are taken from COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) and COHA (Corpus of Historical American English). The concept closest to democracy is freedom. However, in contrast to freedom, democracy is a non-personal concept and totally belongs to the socio-political system. This is what emerges from the use of the word democracy (and related words) in all discourse types. Citizens of the United States generally value democracy highly as a political. Americans are proud of the level of democracy in their country, although this assessment may vary. In the linguistic worldview of US residents, the concept of democracy is represented through oppositions: 1) positive/negative attitude towards democracy as a type of political system; 2) “good”/”bad” (“insufficient” or “excessive”) democracy; 3) ideal/real democracy. Currently, American society is highly polarized along party lines, and any contradiction “fits” into the conceptual grid of its two-party system associated with democratic (liberal) vs. republican (conservative) views.

Kontekstualizacja użyć nazwy barszcz ukraiński w mediach społecznościowych po 24 lutego 2022 roku

Kontekstualizacja użyć nazwy barszcz ukraiński w mediach społecznościowych po 24 lutego 2022 roku

Author(s): Weronika Gocłowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 22/2023

The aim of the paper is to show how the connotations and marking of the term barszcz ukraiński on social media were changing after the war in Ukraine had started. Research material features a wide spectrum of posts from various social media posted in the first weeks of the conflict and in April and July 2022 (right after the key events for the functioning of the term under review here). Social media constitute a space that is most frequently chosen by Internet users for commenting on important events and sociopolitical situation or reacting to current trends. The form of social media posts is casual, direct, concise and not stripped of the emotions of those who write them. Because of that, the analysis of the research material clearly shows the transformation of meaning from a culinary term, used in an informational function to a term of a symbolic meaning. The analysis of Internet sources is preceded by a discussion of the functioning of the lexeme barszcz (borcht) and the analytical term barszcz ukraiński in the Polish language starting from the earliest times to the modernity, which allows for the presentation of the evolution of the meaning from a botanical name to a culinary one.

A CASE STUDY ON CANCEL CULTURE DISCOURSE: THE THEATRE OF THE ABSURD

Author(s): Ana SCALCĂU / Language(s): English Issue: 16/2023

The present paper has two main objectives: one is to explore the ways in which political correctness may affect the world of the theatre, the other is to observe the characteristics of the cancel culture discourse. I define cancel culture as one of the many manifestations of political correctness which refers either to promoting or boycotting people and their work for politically correct reasons. The paper is divided into three parts: a presentation of the immediate context in which the discourse was created, a description of the linguistic features of discourse and an analysis of these characteristics from a pragmatic, rhetorical and logical perspective.

Why Did I Lose My Seat in the United States Congressional Elections? You Didn‘t Advertise Online Enough!

Author(s): Milan Školník,Michael Haman,Anna Marie Nešpůrková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

In this paper, we examine campaign spending on Facebook during the 2020 U.S. congressional elections. We draw conclusions based on data from the Federal Election Commission and the Facebook Ad Library. This is one of the first articles on this topic. We point out and show how this data differs and how other researchers should treat it. Specifically, we focus on U.S. Democratic congresspeople who lost elections. Indeed, during the Democratic Party debate, voices were raised that its progressive wing was to blame for the loss of seats; in contrast, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rising star of the wing, argued that the lack of Facebook advertising was a factor in why seats were lost. The article concludes that the really well-known Democratic figures who lost the elections spent very little on Facebook ads compared to Ocasio-Cortez. We also compare Republican opponents with Democrats. In addition, we highlight how the Ocasio-Cortez campaign and the others differed with respect to the timing of campaign spending and the targeting of Facebook ads to specific states. Further, we compare data regarding campaigns available through the Federal Election Commission and Facebook and underscore the importance of the transparency of the Facebook Ad Library.
