Korrates kordusi. Kreeka romaanides esinevatre kordusfiguuride vahendamisest

The aim of this paper is to explore the possibilities of transferring the rhetorical figures, specifically the figures of repetition which occur in the Greek novels, into Estonian translation. The use and function of sound-repetitions, word- and stem-repetitions and structural repetitions in two Greek novels (Leucippe and Clitophon by Achilles Tatius from the 2nd century AD and Hysmine and Hysminias by Eustathius Macrembolites from the 12th century AD) are shortly described, examining which figures can be rendered into Estonian in exactly the same form, in which cases some minor changes have to be made and in which cases the figures have to be compensated by another device. Sometimes, when several different rhetorical figures are combined in a phrase or a sentence, it is not possible to construct the equivalent combination of figures in Estonian and consequently a figure may be lost in the translation altogether. Individually, most of the figures of repetition can be conveyed into Estonian in exactly the same form or with minor changes, but some of the repetitions are lost due to linguistic differences.

Literární adaptace pověstí o hastrmanovi z českého Slezska

This study will focus on selected literary adaptations of folk tales. The starting point where the authors of the adaptations come from, or whose verbal tradition they draw from, is the area of the so-called Upper Silesia, respectively its Czech part. At the center of our interest are superstition legends with a Hastrman theme (ie the figure of a waterman appears in them). We strive for a complete overview of those authors who have devoted themselves to the adaptation of this type of legend, and we take into account the fact whether their adaptations are suitable for children's readers. We are specifically interested in the authors František Jura, Jan Petrus, Helena Salichová, Karel Dvořáček, František Lazecký and finally Anna Malchárková. We subject the above-mentioned adaptations to analysis and try to point out the similarities, but also the differences between them, using a comparative method. Our goal is to offer an overview, if possible, of all literary adaptations of the legend of the Hastrman from the area of Czech Silesia.

According to statistics, over the last decade, and especially during the last five years, the importance of lyrical poetry as an art form in Western culture has started to grow again. The increasing popularity of both written and oral poetry is associated with the emergence of new media. Here, the platforms of the written poetry are text, photo or/and video sharing social networking services (at first Tumblr, now primarily Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook), and of the oral poetry audio and video distribution media services (SoundCloud, Spotify, YouTube). Therefore, written poetry is no longer only traditional bookish poetry, and oral poetry is no longer confined to folklore. The aim of this article is to examine some attitudes and issues related to the emergence of this digital era poetry and to outline its main features and mechanisms of meaning. The analysis focuses on Estonian Insta-poetry and rap, studying how these subtypes of poetry, which originate from English-speaking cultures, have emerged after a time gap in a smaller literature and how they have changed the audience, the authors, and the meaning-making of poetry. Here, nine more or less intertwined levels that help to understand this turn in poetry are distinguished: (a) the primacy of a single poem, (b) two-way communication, (c) instant emotive communities, (d) the new lyrical self, (e) the intention of genuineness, (f) ephemerality, (g) brevity, (h) new textual relations, (i) visuality/intonation.

Mega-Essay as an Integrated Format in Modern Literature

The article introduces the concept of mega-essay as an integrated format into literary circulation in the era of postmodernism. Its specificity is outlined in other forms of ensemble association of essay works: mega-essay as an integrated formation is a consolidated format, it differs from other forms of essay compilations (collection, cycle) with greater completeness, more thorough basis of design. It has a closed structure, because all its structural components (sections, subsections, framework elements constituting the whole book) are interconnected. They are closely related to the author's intention, outlined in the preface or introduction, concluded on the basis of causal and associative principles. Based on the analyzed works of Ortega y Gasset, O. Zabuzhko’s «Notre Dame dʼUkraine», N. Zborovska’s «My Lesia Ukrainka», etc. conclusions are made about specific features of the mega-essays, in which the phenomenon chosen for comprehension (culture, epoch, turning point of history) is described in detail by incorporating internal and external contexts, authoritative references, other works, and if necessary, with the dominance of the essayistic method of presentation of opinions, related to the personal views of the author. Emphasis is placed on the affinity of ideas and selected essay formats of Ortega y Gasset and O. Zabuzhko, given their content and structural organization. Conclusions are made about the role and significance of essays of this format in postmodern European literature.

O výchove k vedomiu smrteľnosti

Adults often cannot find appropriate answers to children´s questions about death, but fictional literature can do that. Death should be explained to children in an appropriate way through the concept of plant, animal, and human death. This paper is focused on options and ways of incorporating mortality awareness education into school communication. We offer principles and rules for conducting a conversation in the teachers´ child-oriented speech, also an overview of children´s books, animated films, activities with the theme of loss and death, samples of interviews with teachers and parents about their opinions on the inclusion of the topic in the school environment from our doctoral research. The topic is still partially taboo, so we think that in this direction teacher education is desirable.

In the first half of the 1960s, the works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn were frequently published in Yugoslavia, and the writer himself was talked about very positively in public and in official correspondence. The focus was on the work One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. The publication of the said work was approved in the USSR, so there were no problems in relations with Yugoslavia in that field. With the fall of Khrushchev, Solzhenitsyn’s position in the USSR deteriorated. Through the “Solzhenitsyn case”, SFR Yugoslavia showed independence and freedom of the press in its relations with the USSR. Solzhenitsyn’s works were printed and talked about positively, until the publication of The Gulag Archipelago. The publication of Solzhenitsyn’s works and positive articles about him in the Yugoslav press provoked significant protests from the Soviets, especially in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the talks between Yugoslav and Soviet diplomats, the Yugoslav side responded very cautiously, saying that they were unaware of certain information and that the press was allegedly independent. After the publication of The Gulag Archipelago and his emigration, Solzhenitsyn was criticized in the Yugoslav press and ceased to be a stumbling block in Yugoslav-Soviet relations. Yugoslav official institutions stopped mentioning him or his works in the official documents. The Gulag Archipelago was published in SFR Yugoslavia only in 1988.

Emocijski narativi o traumi silovanja u hrvatskoj književnosti od 19. do 21. stoljeća

The topic of rape permeates the cultural, identity and ideological aspects of the literary text. Considering that it is a presentation and expression of traumatic physical, psychological and spiritual experience (mostly women, but in 21st century this is not the rule), the emotional narratives that each text has, or the ways in which it constructs them, play an important role. Through several texts of Croatian literature of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, constructs of emotional narratives about the trauma of rape will be considered. Their development and relationship to ontem, psychic, societal and ideological figures / text structures will be monitored, with a dominant focus on several main emotions that accompany trauma, regardless of the period in which a particular text is created. Due to the necessity of limiting the scope of this research, the corpus consists of several receptionistly influential texts of recent, contemporary and most recent Croatian literature. These are the novels: Seljačka buna by August Šenoa (19th century, rape as the initiator of the collective revolt), Kao da me nema by Slavenka Drakulić (20th century, rape as a political and war subjugation of the collective) and Črna mati zemla by Kristijan Novak (21st century, the rape of a child as a monstrous reverse of the collective in the novel). The three texts will be comparatively analyzed on the basis of emotional narratives about rape with the aim of revealing a paradigm that answers the questions: which traumatological aspects of rape are represented by individual authors, on which narrative actions the effect of emotional empathy is grounded, where narrative empathy is directed, how the trauma of rape as a cultural trope is incorporated by an individual author into the identity constructs of the individual and the collective of the 19th, 20th or 21st century and what it represents on the compositional, societal, ontemic and ideological level of the literary text.

Starting from a very summative discussion about the metadiscourse of the historical novel, Joan Kelly’s and Joan Scott’s contribution to the appearance and the evolution of women’s history, this article’s author constructs a comparison among three women who authored historical novels: Sarah Dunant, Rodica Ojog-Braşoveanu, and Ileana Vulpescu. The problem is whether the Romanian and the international historical novel presents some markers typical of feminine authorship. The answer is negative, even if the lesson offered to the female writers by women’s history, as a research area, is not deprived of consequences. The existence of some feminine authorial markers would presume the existence of a feminine essence which is still, eternally recognizable, and impossible to grasp by those of other genders. Rather, there is a certain positionality, a taste for female characters with a strong personality, some preferences, tendencies towards a presentation of history as women’s history, as well. Sarah Dunant tends to reconstruct the past according to the present taste for political correctness, for the marginalized groups, be they prostitutes or individuals with disabilities. On the other hand, Ojog-Braşoveanu and Ileana Vulpescu combine women’s history with the tropes of the nationalist discourse.

A survey is given of the development of the content and shape of the epistemic particle vist in Estonian texts from the oldest written records to this day. Diachronic analysis revealed a change in the use and meaning of the particle, notably, a gradual decrease in its epistemic certainty. In 17th century texts the forerunner of the modern particle vist was the adverb vissist, meaning ‘for sure’, but in modern standard Estonian vist expresses medium certainty, like oletatavasti ‘probably’. Consequently, we have to do with a process of pragmaticalization. According to our analysis of old dictionaries and texts the shortening vissisti > vist must have occurred nearly two centuries before the semantic change ‘for sure’ > ‘probably’. We assumed that the possible reason for the shortening lay in oral language usage, whence the first appearance of vist in the 1660s, first in Heinrich Göseken’s dictionary (1660) and almost simultaneously in Pastor Christoph Blume’s writings, especially in his hymns. At the time the meaning of both short and long forms was ‘for sure’. In 18th century texts the frequencies of the variants vist and vissisti are nearly equal, whereas in the 19th century vist becomes nearly thrice as frequent as vissisti. The semantic change of ‘for sure’ > ‘probably’ appears in writing since the late 19th century. There are also some bridging constructions illustrating the process of reanalysis. The derivative process of the particle vist is particularly noteworthy: Since the mid-19th century the particle vististi appears in literary Estonian, which was first associated with the initial meaning of vist ‘for sure’, but by today both vist and vististi have aquired the meaning of ‘probably’ (medium certainty). Such semantic change is not, however, unique as similar tendencies can be found in Russian, German and Galician, for example. Therefore, diachronic development of discourse particles certainly deserves more specific qualitative research in the future.

Tożsamość vs uniformizacja (współczesna literatura rosyjska – studium dwóch przypadków)

The aim of the following article is to consider expressions such as “identity” and “uniformization” which are often used in Russian philosophy as well as in contemporary Russian fiction. Two well-known novels translated into Polish language: “Medea and her Children” by Ludmyla Ulitzkha and “Duchless. A Story about Unreal Man” by Sergiey Minayev were chosen as examples. The first of them takesplace in the 1970’s, whereas the second one is set in the present day. In both cases identity is considered in the context of human relationships and the attitude to other people and at the same time to culture and tradition. Identity is usually based on certain determinants. These are: faith in God, the respect for different confessions, proximity to the nature, care for preservation of heritage including memory about the past and native language. Medea follows this hierarchy of values in her life. The identity of an anonymous hero of Minayev’s book was destroyed by globalizing processes, uniformization, boredom and by addiction to the Internet.
