Croatian orthographic tradition has always been turbulent. From the very beginnings of the Croatian Orthography there are more than eighty orthographic editions, twenty of which have been created since the beginning of Croatian independence. The offered orthographic solutions were in the shadow of socio-political events. Some orthographic practice is providing solutions that have roots in the Croatian tradition, while the other emulates the principle of non-inclusion of unnecessary changes in orthography. Currently, four editions of Croatian orthography are valid and in use, and they are all structured in the same way: the first part of the book contains rules, while the second part is a dictionary. This paper deals with the differences between these four editions. There are a number of orthographic issues that these four editions offer, such as different solutions and answers that are confusing the public, because they lead to the conclusion that in Croatian orthography everything is permitted. Therefore, this paper addresses some important differences in writing the sounds č, ć, đ, dž; in shortening syllables with diphthongs; in using upper and lower case initial letters; in the spelling of foreign words, etc. Orthography, as a fundamental normative manual, should be as accessible as possible to the public, and more balanced in suggesting orthographic solutions.

Pitanje se odnosi na sročnost predikata i subjekta ako je subjektu atribut broj dva, tri ili četiri, ali i na rod glagolskoga pridjeva ako je glagolski predikat tvoren glagolskim pridjevom radnim ili trpnim.

paper on synchronic aspects of writing and standardization of single and double quotation marks is the second and final part of the study on quotation characters in the Croatian language. Quotation marks are examined from three research perspectives: the orthographic and sociolinguistic perspective, the linguographic and computational perspective, as well as the terminological perspective. Of the thirty characters in five punctuation subcategories with the feature of a quotation mark in the Unicode system, fifteen of them are Latinic (8 quotation marks and 7 single quotation marks). Croatian orthographic books use six of eight quotation marks („ “ » « ” " plus two graphemes that do not exist in Unicode) and all seven single quotation marks (‚ ‛ ’ ‘ ' › ‹ plus one other non-standardized grapheme). Two models of nomenclature for the terminological norming of all existing quotation marks are suggested (not only for signs that have been used or are still used in the Croatian language): one that is founded in a graphic, graphemic description, and one that is founded in terminological transparency. In place of a discussion on the choice of graphemes in the Croatian linguistic norm, all relevant quotation marks and single quotation marks are evaluated by seven criteria (orthographic tradition and continuity, frequency, transparency, legibility, typographic aesthetics, computational acceptance, and distinctiveness), and three normative models are suggested for the Croatian graphemic standard for quotation marks.

The paper analyses Franjo Benešić’s work Razmatranja (Reflections) from the language point of view. Benešić’s work was reprinted in 2009 with all censors’ interventions because of which it was banned in 1929. Benešić’s style is characterized by pungency and clarity of expression, terseness in addressing both all-time human topics in general and the society and relations in which he had lived and worked and which he observes and judges very attentively and critically. The language analysis shows that F. Benešić, as an educated and versatile person, also paid attention to the language in which he wrote his work. In his language one can observe, from the present-day point of view, some aberrations from the standard Croatian language - aberrations with which language editors are battling even today. On the other hand, Benešić’s work also contains elements of the Slavonian home type of speech as it existed in his home town of Ilok when he was a child. His education in Osijek, Zagreb and Vienna left its mark in the form of occasional use of carefully chosen words and the so-called ‘educated’ lexicon. Departures from the norms of the standard Croatian language under the influence of the then social environment are significantly smaller than expected, which proves that the author actively belongs to the Croatian language corpus.

Čitateljica N. N. pita: „U vezi sa svezom Duh Sveti imam nekoliko pitanja: 1. Ne bi li bilo bolje u duhu hrvatskoga jezika Sveti Duh ili možda Sveti duh kao npr. Sveto pismo? 2. Nije li duh opća imenica, pa bi trebalo pisati malim slovima sveti duh, kao npr. hrvatski duh, kršćanski duh? U prilog tomu ide i ime blagdana Duhovi, što je množina od duh. Molila bih poštovano Uredništvo Jezika da mi odgovori na ta pitanja.“

Naše ovogodišnje okupljanje u Pakracu u povodu dodjele Nagrade dr. Ivan Šreter za najbolju novu riječ u protekloj godini zbiva se u trenutku kad se iz najviših hrvatskih državnih institucija u javnost odašilju dokumenti iz kojih je bjelodano da se hrvatskomu jeziku i hrvatskoj jezičnoj kulturi ne piše dobro.
