Yugoslavia’s Implosion

Author(s): Sonja Biserko / Language(s): English

This is a courageous book, in which the author indicts a large portion of her society, and most especially politicians, for aggressive nationalism. This, she argues, has been the main reason both for the wars of 1991–99 and for the continued volatility which characterizes Serbian political life. This is also a work of passion, reflecting simultaneously a deep sadness about the decisions and actions taken by Serbian political figures over a period of more than a century, and a determination on her part to work for a better future for Serbia. Biserko has many admirers but, inevitably, she also has foes, and has been attacked at times in the local nationalist press.

Urban Amazement

Author(s): / Language(s): English

“Cities are magical places, however their magic is not evenly distributed” - writes Chris Jenks in his general introduction to Urban Culture: Critical Concepts in Literary and Cultural Studies. As much as we agree with Jenks’s words, we believe that cities, first and foremost, are amazing spaces, and this belief finds reflection in the articles gathered in the present volume. The magic of the cities, together with the meandrous urban structure and the journey through the urban landscape are the interweaving aspects discussed in this book. The picture of the city that emerges from the articles contained in Urban Amazement is one of anintricate structure, involving an individual - a traveller, an inhabitant, a writer or a simple observer - into a network of images that is neverconstant or stable, yet always amazing one with its complexity. The numberand, most of all, the diversity of themes discussed in the consecutive studies seem to correspond to the multiplicity of impressions that the urban landscape appears to exert on the subjects examined in the presented texts. Moreover, just like the streets of the city constantly intersect, as some of the articles in the volume illustrate, the presented texts tend to converge at many recurrent aspects, such as the city’s labyrinthine structure, anxiety which the authors see as connected with the impenetrabilityof urban landscape, and the overwhelming sense of amazement which - in many of the presented studies - the urban space evokes in its residents and visitors.

HELSINŠKE SVESKE №35: How Susceptible are the Youth to Islamic Extremism

Author(s): Vladimir Ilić,Srđan Barišić,Stefan Stefanović,Jovana Saračević,Izabela Kisić / Language(s): English

The crucial question here is: Are the Muslim youth in Sandžak imbued with religious extremism or not? Hardly any interethnic and inter-religious incident has been registered in this part of the Republic of Serbia. On the other hand, fighters from Sandžak are being involved in the Iraqi and Syrian wars. Depending on the answer to the question above, the authorities could take appropriate actions aiming at young people in Sandžak. Both domestic and international stakeholders – and there are many of them, including the non-governmental sector – could develop plans and take a variety of concrete steps depending on the answer to this very question.

From Cotton and Smoke: Łódź – Industrial City and Discourses of Asynchronous Modernity 1897-1994

Author(s): Agata Zysiak,Kamil Śmiechowski,Kamil Piskała,Wiktor Marzec,Kaja Kaźmierska,Jacek Burski / Language(s): English

This book envisions Łódź, a city in present-day central Poland, the region’s textile industrial hub, to have been the capital of the Polish 19th century. Its history is a tale of struggle with modern change in Eastern Europe. The authors boldly challenge the romantic and noble-based Polish cultural imaginary, offering instead a revolutionary path to understanding confrontation with modernity in the region. The book examines local press debates during four pivotal periods, each of which stimulated self-reflection on the idea of the modern city: – Rapid industrial growth in the tsarist borderlands; – State crafting after WWI; – Socialist restructuring after 1945; – Transition and deindustrialization after 1989. Together these insights constitute a multi-faced portrait of 20th century urban experience beyond the metropolis, in different historical contexts. This innovative, interdisciplinary work deftly integrates urban and cultural history, historical sociology and discourse research. It will be of great value to Polish and Jewish studies’ specialists, as well as those in the field of Eastern European and Slavic studies. The book also addresses core intellectual debates within urban studies, modernity studies and historical discourse analysis worldwide.

Demokratske kontradikcije multikulturalizma

Author(s): Jens-Martin Eriksen,Frederik Stjernfelt / Language(s): Serbian

OKZ) i „ubistvo predstavnika najviših državnih organa“ (Član 122. OKZ).

Input, Process and Product: Developments in Teaching and Language Corpora

Author(s): / Language(s): English

This volume is a collection of 21 academic papers selected from the ninth biennial Teaching and Learning Corpora conference that was held at Masaryk University in the summer of 2010. The papers were selected through a double blind reviewing process by the academic committee of the conference. The book deals with a variety of uses of language corpora in foreign or second language teaching and learning, and is divided into four parts. Sections 1 and 2 look at corpora as input, first exploring general issues of how they can inform language teaching, and second describing how this can be put into practice and evaluating concrete uses of corpora with learners. Sections 3 and 4 look at learner corpora as output: this includes comparison with native-speaker corpora to identify ‘errors’ or areas of difficulty, but also shows what learners can and do know at different levels of proficiency, and what this tells us about the learning process.

The book presents the results of an action research project which aimed to implement dialogic teaching at lower secondary schools and systematically researched subsequent changes. The monograph opens with two theoretical chapters. The first introduces the key concept of dialogic teaching as a mode of communication which organizes teaching with the aim of stimulating students’ thinking and deepening their understanding of taught content. The second chapter discusses how teachers can change their teaching within further professional development and with the help of video-recorded classes they have taught, their analyses, and their reflections. The focal point of the book is a research project with a professional development course for teachers which consisted of theoretical, experiential, and reflective parts. Therefore, three chapters discuss the course’s results which demonstrate the degree to which teachers were able to manifest changes in their teaching and how these changes were perceived by their students. Through a mosaic of seven case studies, we are shown how the teachers involved transitioned from classic teaching to dialogic teaching, how they dealt with their past habitual patterns of behavior and potential problems which impeded them from fully implementing dialogic teaching, and their ability to reflect on their own teaching. The book concludes with a synthesis, which mainly discusses how difficult it is to change one’s own behavior, especially if the change is very complex and deep.

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria: Between A Rock and A Hard Place

Author(s): Thomas Schmidinger / Language(s): English

This book is based on papers presented at the conference. However, it is not a typical publication of academic conference proceedings because the topics are not completely congruent with those of the conference. Some lectures that could not be held due to travel restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic were submitted as book contributions. In addition, I also wrote a short contribution on the Jewish history of the region, which has been often neglected in previous presentations of the region. The various authors for this volume have been intensively involved with the region in recent years. However, the authors do not only focus on the situation on the ground, but also on the international context of the autonomous administration. The conflict in Syria is no longer just a civil war, but a transnational conflict with important roles played not only by actors such as Russia or the USA, but also Turkey or Iran.Given the transnationality of the conflict and the role of the hegemonic powers, these authors share thoughtful analyses from very different perspectives. It is important to share these diverse views with the world so that the tragic conflict might become more comprehensible. This does not mean, however, that I necessarily advocate each particular position taken by the varied contributors to this book. The intent is to offer you multiple perspectives and certainly not a common narrative.

La Garantie Internationale en Droit des Minorités

Author(s): Athanase Moskov / Language(s): French

Published in 1936 by » Établissements Émile Bruylant, Société anonyme d’Éditions Juridiques et Scientifiques « (Brussels). // M. Moskov's work comes out at a time (1936) when the Law of Nations is going through a particularly acute phase of depression. Jurists will only be more pleased to see, at this precise moment, express with such lucidity, firmness and faith this interpretation of one of the most curious creations of contemporary international law: the guarantee of Minorities Rights elaborated in International Law. Without any doubt, it will surprise many politicians who have been directly involved, in recent years, in resolving the difficulties relating to the treatment of minorities. But is it not the highest mission of the jurist to project on the creations of social life the strong light of a penetrating analysis, to identify their distant origins, to mark their analogies, to render intelligible the functioning of the cogs of the new institution, to locate its place in the evolution of the Law? Attentive to the psychological, moral and social aspects of the new phenomenon, as well as to the conventional texts of which he gives us a penetrating analysis, M. Moskov gives these legal developments a solid basis which carries conviction. His main thesis, which the internationalists of the Contemporary School would be grateful to him for having demonstrated, is that the guarantee of the League of Nations constitutes in this case a real public function, not a faculty. The Council could not therefore avoid it without failing in its task.

Stakeholder Wellbeing and Value Creation

Author(s): / Language(s): English

The relationship between firms and stakeholders is held together by a continuous two-way cycle of value creation. In this, how can value be managed such that the stakeholder’s wellbeing is ensured? How does stakeholder wellbeing vary across business contexts? Are there varied perspectives in understanding stakeholder wellbeing? These and other pertinent questions have been addressed in this book.Particularly, this book provides a synthesis of research perspectives on value creation and stakeholder wellbeing through a collection of chapters from scholars in this area. It synthesizes research perspectives on value into three categories – firm-focused, customer-focused, and community-focused. In doing so, this book presents novel insights through these lenses and highlights best practices in ensuring stakeholder wellbeing.Responding to the rapidly changing business landscape where stakeholders are more connected, accessible, and informed than ever before, many firms are interested in creating value for all and in the process ensuring stakeholder wellbeing. This book will appeal to research scholars, practitioners, consultants, and managers looking to seek new insights and understanding on value creation.

Author(s): Ralitsa Veleva / Language(s): Bulgarian

The scope of research in this work is at the intersection of proactive public policies and poverty. These two phenomena co-exist in a mutually defining contradiction and active development. This challenge sparked my interest in exploring the ways through which states can deliberately improve the conditions of their citizens in both the short and long term. "Poverty" is a category commonly used in daily life as a synonym for hidden deprivation. Perceived primarily as a personal problem, it remains a constant focus of inevitable public interest. In colloquial language, linking existence with "poverty" naturally evokes associations with destitution, scarcity, indigence, and so on, almost always unconsciously connected to its antonym, well-being. This monograph is an attempt to investigate poverty as a social phenomenon within the context of a set of effective tools for its potential gradual reduction, examining it as past experience, present challenges, and future prognosis. Its "eradication" remains but a faint hope. This book results from years of efforts to decipher the mechanism of understanding the functioning of public policies within the context of the factor-determined nature of poverty. We have invested faith in these policies, emphasizing their recognition and role in the development of education (the bidirectional relationship between the two phenomena) to enhance human capital as an anti-poverty factor. Later, our analyses extended to the complex "poverty-health" relationship, including the link between public health expenditures and life expectancy, framed through the concept of "health poverty." At that stage, the state of poverty in the EU member states was fragmentarily addressed, with a focus primarily on Bulgarian theory and practice. These aspectual studies form the emotional foundation of the present work, placing at its core the examination of state interventions in the EU and their potential to ensure a better life for the population in each member state. Having established the strong correlation between the level of completed education (or the lack thereof) and poverty, and how people's health follows the trajectory of their economic and social status, we proceeded to a thorough theoretical analysis of this complex phenomenon in the context of public administration development in the current century. All these inquiries directed our attention to public policies as an instrument for societal governance in modern democracies, including the development of a mechanism to measure the bidirectional relationship "proactive policies-poverty" (based on extensive and in-depth circumstantial evidence), which forms the basis for generating contemporary measures to regulate levels of deprivation in EU countries. In this process, the key characteristic of these policies emerged: their forward-looking perspective, which provoked the use of proactivity as a protagonist in the study. The title of the book contains two focal points: "proactive public policies" (means) and "poverty reduction" (end). These two centers are mutually determined. The increase in poverty requires the formation of proactive policies, whose implementation reduces the intensity of the observed scarcity. The driving forces of poverty management relationships are the integrated potential of state, business and civil organisations, along with the regulatory significance of community bodies. The study is organized into three chapters. The first chapter argues the necessity and possibilities for effective public administration through the application of proactive public policies. The second chapter presents the essential characteristics of poverty, its integration into international analyses, and the attempt to propose a comprehensive indicator framework by understanding the picture that illustrates the state and problems of poverty in EU countries. The third chapter views poverty as a multidimensional phenomenon that affects the choice of socioeconomic action alternatives. Measures for its possible reduction are proposed within the context of feasible political interventions. The conclusion of the study does not contain direct primary findings from the exposition, but through dialogical summaries, it models the diverse palette of the connection between poverty and key proactive factors and expected results. The aim of the research is to present and interpret the necessary "requisites" for the development and implementation of a comprehensive proactive policy for poverty reduction based on the accumulated achievements in this direction by EU countries. The adopted logic of presentation and analysis techniques, though addressing the specific problem of poverty/proactive policies, is applicable to solving other socioeconomic challenges faced by contemporary societies. The methodology of the study is based on the combination of a system approach with positive and normative analysis. The theoretical views on "proactive public policies" and the conceptual coherence between inequality and poverty are based on the analysis of literary sources and document research (desk analysis). In the second and third chapters, a comparative empirical approach is used in combination with the analysis and synthesis of existing best practices. The study contains current empirical material, distinguished by the structured presentation of arguments and tools for the formation and impact of public policies. Evidence is supported by correlation analysis, which evaluates the strength and direction of poverty dependence and its influence on long-term interventions. The study's limitations concern the period from 2011 to 2021/2022, and the observed countries are EU member states. Without bias towards any of them, Bulgaria and Romania are often subject of additional analyses due to their unfavourable position concerning public management of poverty.

Author(s): Gergana Mihaylova-Borisova,Milena Kovachevich,Darina Koleva,Elena Panayotova,Monika Kirilova / Language(s): Bulgarian

The world has been gripped by a series of crises over the past two decades - the Global financial crisis in 2008, the European debt crisis in 2012-2013 and the Pandemic crisis in 2020 caused by the spread of the coronavirus. All these crises have an impact on the economic development of countries worldwide, but inevitably also affect banking activities in many of them. The aim of this monograph is to offer an in-depth and logically coherent scientific study on the problems of economic development and the stability, regulation and efficiency of the banking systems of the countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and to assess the relationship between economic growth and the development of the banking system in these countries, as measured by their technical efficiency. This study covers the CEE countries: Bulgaria Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Latvia. The study argues that in order to achieve sustainable and stable levels of economic growth, it is necessary to maintain a stable and well-functioning banking system, which is the main intermediary in the CEE countries. The CEE countries managed to cope with the worsened economic conditions in the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2007-2008, but got out from it better prepared for the next crises. The banking sector, with its stricter regulations and improved efficiency, remains a key element in the resilience of the economies to the crises.

Author(s): Sofiya Ruseva / Language(s): Bulgarian

The book "Looking at Kotlen's Humorous Folk Song" is a monographic study that traces the characteristics of Kotlen's humorous folk songs - an understudied category of songs, largely spread only in Kotlensko. The song material, the object of the present study, amounts to a total of 58 songs and is the result of various sources - field materials recorded in the period 2001-2010, audio and video recordings, as well as the collections "From the source song flows /authentic Kotlen folk songs/ ", Part I (1993), "Folk Songs from Thrace" (2013) and "Bulgarians - 672 Unpublished Folk Songs from the Kosta Kolev Archive" (2018). The subject of research in the main part of the exhibition are the peculiarities of humorous chants in relation to their functional, metrorhythmic, poetic, form-forming, structural and ladomelodic specificities. The goal is an attempt to clarify the overall appearance of the chants and, if possible, to bring out common features characteristic of humorous song samples. To achieve the objectives of the study, the following research methods were used: observation, interview, description, analysis, synthesis and comparison.

Knowledge Management in Economy, Technology and Education

Author(s): / Language(s): English

In the modern business landscape, organizations driven by labor and capital are increasingly being replaced by knowledge-based entities. The success of businesses now relies on the development of innovative products and services through multidisciplinary expertise and collaborative learning. However, the vast amount of information available often surpasses organizational capacity to effectively convert it into actionable knowledge. This has led to the recognition of intellectual capital, which encompasses human, organizational, and customer capital, as a measurable asset. This volume explores knowledge management's critical role across diverse fields, offering insights into artificial intelligence, quality management, organizational design, leadership styles, consumer behavior, and medical literacy, among others. With contributions from various scholars, this collection serves as a valuable resource for understanding the dynamic interplay between knowledge management and its applications in economic, technological, and educational contexts.
