‘A Job in Politics Is Not for Women’: Analysing Barriers to Women’s Political Representation in CEE

Author(s): Sara Clavero,Yvonne Galligan / Language(s): English Issue: 06/2005

This article discusses women’s political representation in Central and Eastern Europe in the fifteen years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the adoption of liberal democratic political systems in the region. It highlights the deepseated gender stereotypes that define women primarily as wives and mothers, with electoral politics seen as an appropriate activity for men, but less so for women. The article explores the ways in which conservative attitudes on gender roles hinders the supply of, and demand for, women in the politics of Central and Eastern Europe. It also discusses the manner in which the internalisation of traditional gender norms affects women’s parliamentary behaviour, as few champion women’s rights in the legislatures of the region. The article also finds that links between women MPs and women’s organisations are weak and fragmented, making coalition-building around agendas for women’s rights problematic.

Юбилеите на руската емиграция в България (1919–1944) през нейните вестници: приоритет на снизхождащото приспособяване

Author(s): Yordan Lyutskanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

In my article, I analyse the newspaper imprints of some jubilee celebrations performed in the minds of Russian émigrés in Bulgaria, but also outdoors and indoors, between 1919 and 1944. Basing on M. Spariosu’s theory of exilic-utopian imagination and on the intuitive premise that an émigré community would inevitably pursue/problematize its accommodation within the host society, I locate the Russian émigré community and its celebrations within a tri-axial communicative situation whereby impulses for (self-aggrandising) introspection, mental war with the exiling power (sovietised Russia), and domestication of the host milieu are detectable. Considering newspapers as the most effective sites to host places of celebration for a (non-persecuted) ethno-cultural minority in the first half of the 20th c., and basing on prior historiography on the Russian émigrés of Bulgaria and on an overview of their periodicals, I identify as most conspicuous a constellation of jubilees that gravitated around the 50th anniversary from both the beginning and the completion of the 1877–1878 Russian-Ottoman war. Thus, I am able to discern the specificity of the communicative situation of that particular Russian émigré community against the benchmark of the ‘metropolitan’ one based in Paris. I approach these “imprints”, or “places of celebration”, as visual-verbal compositions (elaborating D. Georgiev’s ‘architecturology’ of newspaper); and as textualised experiences potentially reminiscent of the two cultural archetypes of “jubilee” for (post)Christian humankind, the Hebraic and the Roman ones.

Юдите във Веда Словена – демиурзи и медиатори

Author(s): Plamen Bochkov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 15/2017

The article reports data concerning Juda Fairies as a specific type of evil mythical nymphs in the two volumes of Veda Slovena and places them within the context of folklore – song and prose – of the Pirin Mountain region. The analysis focusses on some of the most representative texts mentioning Juda Fairies in Veda Slovena and Tales of the Juda Fairies in the archive of Stefan Verkovic. The conclusion is that Juda Fairies have a special place in both collections of papers and their basic functions are those of progenitors, demiurgs and mediators. The specific traits of the Juda Fairies present them as unique creatures in Bulgarian folklore while also providing parallels with other folk characters in the region with similar or even analogous functions.

Южнославянские влияния в украинском диалекте с. Булаешты (зона Орхейских Кодр) и проблема их интерпретации

Author(s): Aleksey A. Romanchuk / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2009

The paper presents some results of ethnographical and linguistic investigations, which have been held since 2004 in micro zone Bulaeshty-Lopatna-Myrzachy (R. Moldova, Orhei dis.) by «Fun Anthropology» Research Center. The main conclusions are that the Bulaesty language is closely connected with some dialects of Ukrainian language from the Carpathian region. There are strong differences between these dialects and Bulaesty dialect as well. These differences show that relations between them disappeared not later than at the beginning of 16th century. On the other hand, we find some influences from the South Slavic languages in Bulaesty dialect which do not exist in Romanian language and some other Ukrainian dialects. So, the author suggests that the only interpretation of this fact is that these influences had their effect before the appearance of medieval Moldavian state. And we should consider that this Bulaesty population is connected by origin with some pre-Moldavian population of this region.

Юношеската раждаемост като проблем на съвременната динамика на раждаемостта в България

Author(s): Marta Sugareva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2013

Fertility dynamics during the last decades is analyzed in the paper. The central argument is that teenage fertility in Bulgaria is too high compared to the other European countries, what calls the need for a special policy. The society is misguided with respect to the assessment of fertility trends, as far as the general opinion it that it is too low and decreasing, while in reality it has been increasing during the last decade. The present levels of fertility are at the European medium level. The tendencies are upwards, and the expectation based on some demographic arguments (restructuring of the age distribution of fertility) are that this trend will continue in the future. Nevertheless urgent policy is needed to decrease the teenage fertility. With the present policy the high teenage fertility is a modus of poverty alleviation, preformed rationally in a specific (“traditional”) social setting, typical for some segments of the ethnic Roma population. In these settings young people (teenagers) are being pushed to early childbearing by their extremely poor families as a source of income (provided by social assistance allowances distributed upon the income “per capita”) for the whole family. At the same time these teenagers, who become parents, “drop out” from school, which in turn perpetuates the vicious circle of poverty and early childbearing.

Явление лексической паронимии как лингводидактическая проблема

Author(s): Elena Stoyanova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2019

The paper is devoted to the problems of lexical paronymy in the aspect of teaching Russian as a foreign language. The paper examines the verbal single-root paronymic lexemes of the Russian language and their equivalents in the Bulgarian language. The relevance of the study is due to the processes of globalization and intercultural dialogue, as well as the concomitant problems of reducing the language culture. Linguistic and didactical difficulties of paronymy and its teaching in the Bulgarian audience are due to the phenomenon of inter-linguistic homonymy. Among the system errors in the study of the Russian language, there is a mixture of paronyms as a violation of lexical normativity. We provide a generalized table of the use of paronymic verbs, which analyzes intergenerational equivalents.

Ядрени и/или периферийни средства за изразяване на презумптивна семантика в българския и в новогръцкия език

Author(s): Desislava Dimitrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2019

On the focus of the comparative research are the linguistic means expressing presumptive semantics in Bulgarian and New Greek languages. The study has two main objectives: to highlight the question, related to the status of presumptive combinations with will-; to look for other linguistic means that express presumptive semantics in the compared languages. The article discusses the potential for fifth mood (presumptive) in Bulgarian language. It is noted also the possibility the presumptive forms to be peripheral modifiers for conclusive expression. In Greek linguistics the presumptive meaning is considered within the boundary of epistemic modality. Separate authors present a paradigm „potential mood“. The purpose of study is to acts of inter-language symmetry and asymmetry in the peripheral expression of presumptive meaning.

Язык государствообразующего народа. Об одной поправке к российской конституции в контексте мифологической функции законодательного текста

Author(s): Jakub Sadowski / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2021

In the conditions of a rule-of-law state, the Constitution is the main reference point of its legal system, while in the realities of modern society living in a state governed by the rule of law, it may also have significant symbolic functions. The new wording of Article 68 of the Russian Constitution, proposed in the law of 2020 on the amendment to the Constitution, defines the state language – Russian – as "the language of the state-forming nation belonging to the multinational union of equal nations of the Russian Federation". In this article, this term is analyzed as evidence of the strategy to impose mythological functions on the legislative text. In case of the concept of "Russian language", this strategy manifested itself already in 2005 in the federal law on the State language, which established the status of the Russian language as a tool to "strengthen inter-ethnic relations in a unified multi-ethnic State". The law on the amendment of the Russian Constitution goes beyond the very introduction of mythological components into the legal text and presents a strategy to legitimize mythology through an act of general vote.
