„Автентичната“ селска депопулация на България

Author(s): Nickolay Tsekov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

For more than seven decades the scope and pace of depopulation of rural areas in Bulgaria have been describing as one of the most significant social evils and obstacles before the development of the country. The pace of depopulation of villages in Bulgaria in the second half of 20-th century is among the highest in the world. Although serious damages that rural depopulation has been causing to the country and to the chances of its rural areas for positive demographic, social and economic development, there are not many studies dedicated to the problems and consequences from rural flight leading to the desertification of vast no urbanized areas. In the paper below we are representing a new approach towards studying of the pace of rural depopulation. The focus is put on comparing rates of depopulation and its spatial expansion by tracking the dynamics in the number of so called “authentic” rural population. The shortest explanation of this term is that it is the population that has always been rural for the entire period of study.

„Бебетата-бегълци“: непридружените непълнолетни бежанци в България

Author(s): Anna Rizova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2012

The number of unaccompanied minors in Bulgaria is not large: between 20 and 30 unaccompanied minors are reported to apply for protection annually. Yet their stories are the most disturbing, and reveal immense problems: of all refugees it is the group of unaccompanied minors that experience most serious difficulties when leaving their homeland and facing the loss of their loved ones. They are the most vulnerable to discrimination and abuse, as well as the most difficult to integrate. The European Union has taken special measures to create a common and coordinated approach to reception, protection and integration of unaccompanied minors. They quickly receive refugee status in Bulgaria, and disappear from the country soon after. This is why public servants, who have been in contact with them at work, have come to name them ‘runaway babies’. This paper focuses on specific issues of unaccompanied minors, who have either applied or received protection in Bulgaria and on reasons underlying the failure of the state to provide protection, the end-result being that unaccompanied minors quickly leave the country. It is based on both a number of interviews with unaccompanied minors and an analysis of relevant regulations and practices.

„Без-честието на безчестните...": Архив, свидетелства, документ. (Случаят с примерните войнишки разстрели, 1915—1918 г.)

Author(s): Snezhana Dimitrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2009

This article tries to challenge the potential of micro-history: following the clue ('a shadow of a soldier shot by his commanding officer for self-inflicting a wound') provided by a biographical situation of being concerned by... ('to be faced with the possession of a shameful past') in order to seek for documents of ‘infamy of infamous people’ (‘soldiers executed by firing squad in World War I’). Going through the ‘underground labyrinths’ of conventional archives (drumhead court-martial dossiers) and because of its winding research itineraries, micro-history analysis (in this case) ends up opening the particular archive (the living body); it has been constructed (in trauma the experience is stored in the body without the mediation of consciousness) by an unbearable view – his Gorgon glare kills by transforming human into inhuman – ‘the soldier shot by firing squad, the drooping, kneeling body, blind and alone on a picket for execution’, and (em)powered by and (em)powering onto its special subject – ‘a live witness, victim, survivor’. The archive documents of testimony (in Freudian terms, the survivor’s narrative is a way of mourning), as it were, lift the false masks that the plays of memory and history put on the martial past: a special place of ‘death-infamy’. Thus, microhistory analysis in this case outlines how the actuality of archive (in Foucault’s terms) helps us to discover that ‘our reason is the difference of discourses, our history is the difference of times, we ourselves are the difference of masks’; micro-history analysis is somehow bound to keep the ‘infamy of infamous people’ constructed by the system of ‘said and unsaid’, and explains why the witness (in Agamben’s terms), who insists on listening to the lacunas of bearing witness, covers with honor the body of infamous people (‘misfit soldier shot by firing squad in WW I’) through ‘the potentiality of language and its taking place’ (by empowering the parole – a clue left here by the live experience – a special document of the witness, the survivor).

„Вътре и между два свята“ (Кадзуо Ишигуро „Бледият изглед към хълмовете” и „Остатъкът от деня“)

Author(s): Magdalena Kostova-Panayotova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2020

The article studies two novels of one of the cross-cultural writers Kazuo Ishiguro – A pale view of hills (1982) and The remains of the day (1989). Way before he received his Nobel prize in 2017, Ishiguro has already been acknowledged internationally and his novels have been translated in many languages all over the world, winning literary awards. His novel The remains of the day (1989) was adapted into an Oscar nominated film with a cast full of well-known stars. The movie was nominated in 8 categories. Important themes in Ishiguro’s works are the return to the past, the memory, the search for signs and personal identity, the discursive crossing of boundaries and cultural narratives. In this space, which is ‘somewhere inside and in-between two worlds’, values and structures are reassessed, the history of the past is restructured and all of this happens from the viewpoint of the alienated narrator. Ishiguro's novels represent a meta-text with respect to Western stereotypes of the East and „Japanese“, which have their roots in Japanese culture itself, but conceive of it ambivalently. Likewise, the novel The remains of the day is a metatext concerned with the phenomenon of „Englishness“ which exists on many levels in the work’s structure, but this recognition of the „English novel” is again in the zone of hybrid mentality.

„Гостите“ от Сирия: правителствени политики и медийни образи на бежанците в Турция

Author(s): Georgetta Stoykova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2014

In March 2011, Syria was shaken by a series of demonstrations that gradually grew into a civil war. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian citizens, with or without official documents, through official border points or through illegal channels, left their native country and became political refugees. The impact of immigration waves was strongest on the bordering states - Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. The article presents the problem in one of its regional contexts, focusing both on the politics of the Turkish state towards refugees and on the various media images of this category of people.

The article analyzes the collection of old-printed books, which are kept in the Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski. These books are poorly researched in Macedonian and Bulgarian historiography. The focus is on the brief notes made in the margins of a book. They testify to the important role that the monastery had in the 17th-19th centuries. In addition these notes are a testimony to the lives of ordinary people which often leaving aside from the Big Narrative.

„Дайте ни мъжете, пуснете ги да си дойдат и те ще ни намерят всичко, което ни трябва“ – Първата световна война, женските бунтове и политиките на женска еманципация

Author(s): Snezhana Dimitrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

Studying the various forms of women’s political and civic activity during the First World War, the article reveals a different resource of women’s agency (and emancipation), i.e., the affective environment of women’s experience (their pain and their social suffering). Emphasizing the problem of (micro and macro) corruption, a specific social phenomenon that the anger of women made publicly visible, the article also stresses a new process, i.e., “becoming aware of what it means to be a woman” and “what it means to be a man” (beyond the horizon of defined gender roles). The author reveals why it was precisely the anger of women (the poor one’s, in many cases uneducated) that expressed “the horror of their coercive situation showing its face” (M. Duras). Thus, the article is an attempt to rethink the national modern project and certain mechanical and idealistic interpretations (by left-wing and right-wing historians) of the growth of political awareness among new historical subjects: the people, the workers, women. Thus the author emphasizes how the new joint communities of men and women were formed (communities that cut across gender, social and class divisions) in the course of resistance against the threatened ontology – what is in fact just and what isn’t. In this way, the moral boundaries of society were revealed (inasmuch as the fact that those boundaries were being crossed provoked joint resistance against this transgression). Along with this, other boundaries (those between good from evil) became clearly perceptible, and hence, a “new ethical society” became suddenly thinkable (a society in which hunger, bad hygiene and death from social diseases, such as typhus fever, tuberculosis, alcoholism, would no longer be part of the normal order of things). The article attempts to show how it was precisely the emancipation of (ordinary and often uneducated) women from their forced passivity and social unhappiness that contained other views of women about the social world.
