Adopting evidence-based practices in community information engagement for sustainable development in Nigeria: the strategies and innovations

Adopting evidence-based practices in community information engagement for sustainable development in Nigeria: the strategies and innovations

Author(s): Ngozi Osuchukwu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Aim: The aim of the article has explored the evidence-based strategies, innovations, and challenges in community information dissemination for sustainable development in Nigeria.Research method: This was a survey that was carried out in twelve communities located in upland and riverine communities under the information center of a non-government organization (NGO) in Anambra state. The community dwellers were engaged at different times through community visits, dialogues with community-based groups, interviews, and observations. The data were presented using systematic, logical framework analysis that displayed the breakdown of activities, output, and outcomes. Results: The assessment of the strategies and innovations in community engagement revealed that information services are needed and appreciated through good practices of advocacy, collaboration, voluntary services, space creation, indigenous knowledge management, media, learning and sharing. The challenges were lack of trust, language barrier, and community entry. The data was presented using a logical framework analysis. Conclusions: The study implied that, if community engagement is ignored, the dwellers will continue to be excluded and library and information services will be relegated to the background as an obscure, irrelevant profession. The study, therefore, recommended that LIS professionals in any sector should take center stage in community engagement of host communities using good practices of information strategies and innovations.

Agricultural Rural Libraries in Serbia in the Era of Information Technology

Agricultural Rural Libraries in Serbia in the Era of Information Technology

Author(s): Vesna Crnković / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

This paper shows that in the era of rapid growth of technological advances (computerization and the Internet), in villages in Serbia, most farmers have neither computers at their homes nor Internet access. This fact indicates that farmers are excluded from the modern electronic flow of information and announcing, and a lot of important information does not reach them as endusers. Also, farmers are unable to educate and improve professionally, to visit fairs, seminars, lectures due to their poor financial situation. Public Library Radislav Nikcevic in Jagodina, Serbia, having perceived the issue of rural population in villages of the municipality of Jagodina, learned the needs of agricultural producers for fundamental changes. Also, Public Library in Jagodina, based on the research conducted in 2008 and 2009 in the villages in the territory of Jagodina, generated the idea that rural libraries must take an active role in creating new models of changes in the local community. The need for modernization of agricultural production imposed the need to modernize rural libraries through introduction of new services which would be in the function of social, economic and cultural status of rural population. Following the example of modern libraries of 21st century, the concept of modern rural libraries was designed. The Public Library in Jagodina decided to revitalize four rural libraries in the territory of Jagodina and introduce new library services which promoted rural libraries as information and cultural centers of local communities through the project called AgroLib-Ja (Agricultural Library in Jagodina). The project was funded by EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) during 2010 and 2011 and since 2011 Serbian Ministry of Culture has continued funding it. Farmers have learned to come to useful information, to exchange experiences and establish cooperation through certain websites and social networks. Also, they learnt that products could be sold and bought on the Internet. This paper shows that the concept of working with innovative services in rural libraries is sustainable for sharing information and linking farmers, which was proved by the librarians in Latvia, Lithuania and FYROM Macedonia which have adapted the AgroLib project to the needs of their local communities, as well as a growing number of libraries in Serbia that are trying to provide funds for the revitalization of rural libraries in their municipalities. Also, we want to prove that the Internet and social networks have an important role in educating farmer and in agribusiness and marketing.

Analiza bibliometryczna piśmiennictwa z zakresu komputeryzacji bibliotek na podstawie „Polskiej Bibliografii Bibliologicznej”

Analiza bibliometryczna piśmiennictwa z zakresu komputeryzacji bibliotek na podstawie „Polskiej Bibliografii Bibliologicznej”

Author(s): Izabela Swoboda / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2018

One planned to present a quantitative description of the Polish literature which is thematically associated with the problems of the computerisation of libraries in Poland; to define the dynamics of its growth across the span of the last fifty years and to identify – and to provide a quantitative description thereof – of the particular problems which were the subject of the publication until the end of 2017. One applied a bibliometrical method, and the source of data for the bibliometrical analyses was constituted by the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” (PBB). The study enabled one to determine the time when the bibliological and informatological literature saw the emergence of the first publications which are thematically associated with the problems of the automatisation of libraries and how the dynamics of the growth of the literature in this field occurred in the years 1970–2009. As far as the particular problems are concerned, one indicated only the publications devoted to online catalogues, digital libraries and the Internet in library science. The study also facilitated the identification of factors which hindered or even precluded bibliometrical analyses – the latter were necessary for the obtaining of reliable results. The work was enhanced by the elements of the analysis of the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” in terms of its utility as a source for bibliometrical research in the problems which are discussed.

Analysing and Comparing Strategies of Public and Academic Libraries regarding their Period, their Vision and Mission as well as Values and Strategic programs

Analysing and Comparing Strategies of Public and Academic Libraries regarding their Period, their Vision and Mission as well as Values and Strategic programs

Author(s): Ane Landoy,Petra Düren / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Strategic planning in academic and public libraries is vital and gaining importance in libraries all over the world. In this research project –using the qualitative method of documentary research based on “convenience sampling” –33 strategies from libraries from eleven countries are analysed regarding their time period, vision and mission, as well as values of the libraries, and their strategic programs. This research analyses only 33 libraries from eleven different countries, as not every library has published its strategy and a lot of libraries do not have a strategy at all. As such the results of this research are limited and cannot be transferred to all libraries, however interesting results could still be found. Of the analysed libraries one-third have not formulated a vision, about two-thirds did not write down their mission and more than half of them did not express their values. All libraries have developed strategic ideas and programs to develop their library, their staff as well as their services. Another interesting aspect is that not all aspects of the libraries’ values have been considered and are included in the libraries’ strategic programs. There are good and complete library strategies published, but more can be done in developing and implementing strategies in libraries –probably worldwide. This documentary research is helpful, as not only can be seen where libraries are heading in the future, but it can also help library leaders of libraries without a current strategy to gain ideas and transfer those to their own libraries .

Ante Glavičić i pučka gradnja okolice Senja i Velebita u Senjskim zbornicima I-XXIX

Author(s): Helena Knifić Schaps / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2013

Prof. Glavičić with an all encompassing reflection of his primary area of interest - Senj and its surroundings and Velebit – considered the presence of man as its inseparable part. Visiting these areas and the people throughout his entire working life, he wanted to preserve the memory of the way of life and encourage the interest of the profession in the still living settlements, the existing buildings and the way of building. Almost 30 years of collaboration both in Senj and Velebit as well as on the island of Cres resulted in the systematic study of house building and the life of the people in the area of Podbilo and parts of Northern and Central Velebit, in the period from 2000 to 2002. A number of settlements, ponds and wells were visited. The memories of the rare remaining populations were noted during the visits about the former way of life and construction and thearchitecture of the buildings was recorded in the most authentic condition. Based on these common, and numerous following field trips, a book was put together by the author of this contribution: Velebit arhitektonski, Pučka gradnja u dijelovima Sjevernog iSrednjeg Velebita (Velebit architectural, house building in parts of Northern and Central Velebit), dedicated to professor Ante Glavičić.

Apponiovci a ich knižnica v Oponiciach

Author(s): Lívia Fábryová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 2/2008

The article deals briefly with the history of the family that significantly influenced the history of Oponice (Appony), a local castle and Renaissance manor that later became the home of the famous family library of Apponyi. It was founded in Vienna by Count Antal György Apponyi in 1774. The author studies the history of its collections, as well as the most important persons related to its maintenance and survival. It was not only the Apponyi family members that contributed to its high quality, but also professional and lay librarians (e.g. Carl Anton Gruber). The most attention is paid to the library collection, with the prints from the 16th century described in detail by their topics and place of origin. Currently, these prints have been converted into digital form and they are due to be published in book form. The library was moved to Martin in the 1970s and later to the manor in Diviaky. Today, part of this collection can be viewed in the mansion at Oponice.
