A Method for Modeling a Schema for Graph Databases

Author(s): Peretz Shoval / Language(s): English / Issue: VIII/2018

The recent decade had brought about massive growth in the Web and Web data - pictures, documents, videos and more. What worked well for years with relational databases is not well suited for the unstructured massive amounts of data and applications that are part of the Web, such as social networks. As a result, new types of database have emerged, including NoSQL (“not only SQL”) databases. Graph data-bases are one type of NoSQL database.

A Practical Approach to Ascertaining the Accuracy and Resolution of Post Rendered 3D Models Acquired Originally via 3D Digitization

A Practical Approach to Ascertaining the Accuracy and Resolution of Post Rendered 3D Models Acquired Originally via 3D Digitization

Author(s): Feng Zhao,Soo Choon Loy / Language(s): English / Issue: VII/2017

3D digitization is becoming the norm in the preservation of tangible cultural properties be it movable or immovable. In the case of mobile cultural objects, 3D models are normally acquired through non-destructive methods such as photogrammetry or 3D scanning using structured light or laser. The continuing improvements in scanning equipment which result in higher accuracy and resolution can be translated to mean higher level of 3D data acquired. At times, the quantity of 3D data of a single model can get too large and beyond what a normal work-station can process. This is where optimization comes in. However, the level of optimization will vary to suit the final purpose or usage of the 3D model. During optimization, the resulting optimized 3D model is bound to suffer from some level of data loss when compared to the original 3D model acquired directly from laser scanning. This paper discusses a practical method devised by Amber Digital Solutions in maintaining a high level of accuracy of the final optimized model for national archival purposes which requires the highest form of quality.

Analiza bibliometryczna piśmiennictwa z zakresu komputeryzacji bibliotek na podstawie „Polskiej Bibliografii Bibliologicznej”

Author(s): Izabela Swoboda / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2018

One planned to present a quantitative description of the Polish literature which is thematically associated with the problems of the computerisation of libraries in Poland; to define the dynamics of its growth across the span of the last fifty years and to identify – and to provide a quantitative description thereof – of the particular problems which were the subject of the publication until the end of 2017. One applied a bibliometrical method, and the source of data for the bibliometrical analyses was constituted by the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” (PBB). The study enabled one to determine the time when the bibliological and informatological literature saw the emergence of the first publications which are thematically associated with the problems of the automatisation of libraries and how the dynamics of the growth of the literature in this field occurred in the years 1970–2009. As far as the particular problems are concerned, one indicated only the publications devoted to online catalogues, digital libraries and the Internet in library science. The study also facilitated the identification of factors which hindered or even precluded bibliometrical analyses – the latter were necessary for the obtaining of reliable results. The work was enhanced by the elements of the analysis of the “Polish Bibliological Bibliography” in terms of its utility as a source for bibliometrical research in the problems which are discussed.

Archiwum / apparatus uczonego. O fiszkach Stanisława Pietraszki

Author(s): Aleksandra Kil / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 02/2017

The author analyses index cards which form a part of the legacy of Professor Stanisław Pietraszka, the founder of cultural studies in Wrocław. To describe the material not researched to date, she uses the category of apparatus, taken from the media archaeology. It helps to discern within the index cards a medium, typical for the analogue humanities, that is (although not only) the “archive technology”, as well as the presentation of the ways this contraption works, by balancing between the creative and idiosyncratic element and quite rigorous rules of formalisation and organisation.

Library of the Archives of Tuzla Canton has eleven titles of journals in the field of archival science, which are coming out/are published in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Ljubljana, Maribor, Zagreb, Osijek and Belgrade. Some of them are still significant from its professional archival aspect. They show us the archival progress to date and what was the time of establishment and development of archival activities in the former Yugoslavia, because many archives established only after the end of World War II. In them we find many of their experiences, but often reviews of funds that were stored in the archives. Journals from more recent periods have great educational and informative character, producing guidelines and new knowledge among archivists, registrars, students of history and archival science and to all those who handle the registry and archival material. In these journals we can find everything is new, modern and advanced in the field of archival science, including computer science. Some of these new themes are: the new international standards, linking archival science and information technology and the experience obtained by colleagues who work in this field, archival profession and its place in the European Union and importance of electronic records, material owned by private individuals, digitization of materials and even all the new experiences in the field of archival science, as well as all valuable experiences that is brought by the authors not only from European countries but also from other continents. Besides these topics, these journals constructively bring the contents of the important issues in the field of archival business such as valorization of archival terminology, protection structure and its restoration, legislation accompanying archival business, networking and cooperation of archives and exchange of experiences, etc. We expect this contribution initiate completing missing numbers indicated archival journals and ensure that revives interarchival exchange of journals.

ARHIVSKI FONDOVI I ZBIRKE U SLUŽBI KORISNIKA - Iskustvo Arhiva Tuzlanskog kantona-

Author(s): Hatidža Fetahagic / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian / Issue: 19/2016

This paper discusses the way in which arranged archival holdings and collections affect the process of use and research. We distinguish orderly archival fonds and collections with registry listings. Archives, especially in our region are not able to handle all stored archival archival materials because of the lack of personnel in the services and treatment as a solution imposed by better cooperation and a higher degree of education archivist working with creators of archive material which ultimately should result in obtaining unprocessed current records as whole fonds. Archival arranged backgrounds and collections are suitable for fast searching and research, and the ordering of archival fund or collection is the precondition for digitizing and microfilming them.

ARHIVSKI STANDARD ISAD(g) I SITUACIJA U SLOVAČKOJ ARHIVISTICI

ARHIVSKI STANDARD ISAD(g) I SITUACIJA U SLOVAČKOJ ARHIVISTICI

Author(s): Monika Pekova / Language(s): Bosnian / Issue: 15/2012

In summary we can state that there are not many differences between archival standards ISAD(g) in one side and information in electronic archival information system AFondy and Methodological instruction for priority processing archival fonds on the other side. As yet unresolved area we see a strict hierarchical division of information about archival described by the level of individual items. Impulse for comparison with international standards, use of archival applications was need to solve a question if we are “compatible” with the world. Even before the future we take a final decision to adopt the standard or not, we have to answer a lot of questions. Hereby, we must recognize the entering of computer processing, online access to archival documents has influence at the unit and content of archival description. Maybe to the final decision help view of Lisa Weber, who says “The use of standards for archival description allow to avoid syndrome perpetual inventory making and force archivists to take the final decision and not to return constantly to solve the same issues.”

Az Erdélyi Tudományos Füzetek története és könyvészete

Az Erdélyi Tudományos Füzetek története és könyvészete

Author(s): György Gaal / Language(s): Hungarian / Issue: 3-4/2009

The »Erdélyi Tudományos Füzetek« (Transylvanian Scientific Booklets) was started in 1926 as a collection of extracts from the first Hungarian scientific periodical of Transylvania after World War I, »Erdélyi Irodalmi Szemle« (Transylvanian Literary Review). These booklets of 20–30 pages dealt mostly with literary, historical and ethnographical topics. The editor of the review and of the collection was Lajos György. In 1930 he quitted the »Szemle« and restarted the periodical of the Transylvanian Museum Society, the »Erdélyi Múzeum« (Transylvanian Museum) which also published studies of natural sciences. From now on the collection published mostly extracts from this review, but there were included some studies published elsewhere, too. Beginning with 1941 Attila Szabó T. is the editor up to 1947, when both the review and the collection were prohibited. Up to this moment 208 booklets were published. In 1990 the Transylvanian Museum Society restarted its activity, and the review as well the collection were activated again. In this collection in the period between 1991 and 2007 there were published 51 booklets. But these booklets are rarely extracts, they are in most cases large studies or even dissertations (PhD. theses). So the extent of the booklets is very often over 100 pages. The Transylvanian Scientific Booklets with its 259 numbers can be considered the most important scientific collection of the Hungarians from Transylvania. The bibliography of the collection and the complete list of contributors is published.

Author(s): Osman ÖZER / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 8/2014

Ottoman and European relations were not constructed only on wars. It is obvious that there are also cultural relations between the two civilizations. It is natural for the long lasting sovereignty of the Ottoman to create some studies in the West to understand the Ottomans. Hundreds of books written in Turkish are available in many European countries as a consequence of the attempt to understand the Ottomans. Switzerland is one of the countries with an extensive amount of Turkish manuscripts. Turkish, Arabic and Persian manuscripts brought from the Ottoman cultural geography are available in the libraries of Switzerland today. A catalogue was created in 2008 with the name “Arabische, türkische und persische Handschriften” about the handwritings in Zurich Library. However, a catalogue about the manuscripts in Basel University Library has not been created yet. The study aims at least informing the researchers who are interested in studying relevant topics in Turkey, about the manuscripts included in this catalogue.
