“Between the Mouth of the Two Rivers”. The Agency of Water, Springs, Rivers and Trees in ancient Mesopotamian Cosmology and Religion

“Between the Mouth of the Two Rivers”. The Agency of Water, Springs, Rivers and Trees in ancient Mesopotamian Cosmology and Religion

Author(s): Anna Perdibon / Language(s): English / Issue: 44/2021

This contribution offers an anthropological view of holy waters, springs, sacred rivers, and trees in the ancient Mesopotamian religious framework. Water is omnipresent in Mesopotamian myths and rituals, particularly in association with the cosmic Apsû, the primeval source of all waters. The pristine waters flow out through springs in the mountains and form the flowing bodies of rivers. For the Babylonians and Assyrians, rivers and watercourses were sacred and cosmic entities, often worshipped as deities. The Tigris and the Euphrates particularly appeared as river deities, with life-giving, motherly, healing, and judging roles. This essay considers the interrelationships between the Apsû, springs and sacred rivers, and the associated sacred trees, mountains and anthropomorphic deities, to shed new light on ancient Mesopotamian notions about nature, religion, and the cosmos.

Floodplains along regulated rivers often suffer from serious environmental degradation. River and floodplain rehabilitation measures along the major rivers of Hungary are motivated by two objectives: to inrease the floodwater retention capacity of floodplains (also beyond the dykes) and to improve the ecological conditions of floodplain habitats (with special regard to oxbow lakes). In this paper reports and documents mostly written in Hungarian are presented for the international public on river and floodplain rehabilitation efforts. Examples for the water management objective are cited from the Tisza and Körös Rivers, while interventions promoting the second, nature conservation (and also forestry and agriculture), aim are mentioned from the Danube and Drava Rivers. A common characteristic of the case studies is that they apply ’hard engineering’ solutions to environmental problems. Although water availability in the Szigetköz floodplain has substantially improved after the building of the bottom weir, the efficiency of the recently implemented engineering measures (the emergency reservoirs along the Tisza and water replenishment structures along the Drava) is too early to judge.

Author(s): Aleksandra Ljuština / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 163/2017

Migration is one of the oldest and most used strategies for overcoming negative social issues. Despite the fact that it is historically deeply rooted, environmental migration as a social phenomenon has only recently become the subject research of numerous scientific fields. However, the study of current environmental migration is characterized by a number of issues, such as absence of an adequate definition and multi-causality of environmental migration. In this paper, through conceptual framework, author analyzed two main questions: who are environmental migrants and what reasons cause environmental migration. Due to the destruction of the global environmental balance, as well as accumulated environmental disturbances, it is likely that environmental migration will increase in future and there is nowhere you cannot make more use of scientific and professional projection of the future than in demographic and environmental spheres of human life. There is no doubt that our future is unpredictable. However, the environmental factors influencing the pattern of human interaction with the environment must be taken into account when projecting future development of the modern society. Such is the context in which the complex relation among migration, change and the environment has to be studied. In order to establish the basis for controlling environmental migration caused by negative changes in the environment, it is necessary to adopt a consistent strategy instead of ad hoc activities that are being used. In this paper, author analysed societal respoonse for the chalenges caused by environmental migration, specificaly regarding actions related to governing environmental migrations.

Пространственное распределение мелких млекопитающих в зависимости от влияния рыжих лесных муравьев (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) и растительного покрова в условиях Нижегородского Предволжья

Author(s): Elena Evgenievna Boryakova,Svetlana Anatolievna Melnik / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 3/2017

Introduction. The article presents the results of research devoted to the study of the spatial interaction of small mammals and red wood ants as species with overlapping ecological niches. The aim of the research is to study the influence of ants Formica aquilonia Yarr. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) on the spatial structure of Micromammalia populations in mixed forest. Materials and Methods. The research involved trapping of mammals, which was carried out by means of Gero traps. Geobotanical descriptions were made according to standard methods using areas 20 × 20 m; the package Statistica 6.0 was used for processing of results. Results. It is revealed that mouselike rodents follow anttrails despite the disturbance factor caused by ants. It is presumably due to vegetation in the immediate vicinity of anthills, and the conditions created by the plants. The obtained results enable the authors to conclude that there are two groups of small mammals with different ecological strategies: mammals inhabiting areas near ant-trails and anthills, and socalled "careful" ones, which settle over a distance. The "core" of the both groups probably includes dominant species, such as the bank vole Cletrionomys glareolus and the Pygmy field mouse Apodemus uralensis. The results of the study did not show that mammals, inhabiting areas near ant-trails and anthills, were attracted by species Formica aquilonia on trophic level. The study did not find the evidence of using ants as a food resource. Conclusions. The interaction of small mammals and ants in the mixed forests of the Volga Upland is, apparently, mediated by the influence of vegetation.

Резултати спелеолошких и спелеоклиматолошких истраживања великог леденика на Девици, Ртањске и Тупужничке леденице

Author(s): Dragan Nešić / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 2/2002

The Great ice-cellar on Devica and the ice-cellars of Rtanj and Tupižnica are karst pits of the Karpathobalkan mountain system of the Eastern Serbia. These are specific speleological objects with the static ice-cellar characteristics and that implies the permanent retaining of the cold pit air without any circulation and also periodical duration of ice and snow. The climatic features of these pits are conditioned by their morphological characteristics and by the mountain climate. Our speleoclimatic explorations have pointed out to some smaller daily and somewhat bigger annual swayings of pit air temperature. These annual swayings influence the appearance and melting of ice and the absence of the air circulation between the pit and the outside in the warmer part of the year, while during the winter this circulation is present. Morphologically, these ice-cellars belong to the type of common oblique pits, while morphogenetically they are of tectonic-karst base.

The results of the comparative study on the growth of the four larch proveniences in geographic cultures of 60 years old on the territory of the Forest Experimental Garden of the Russian State Agrarian University (Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy), including Scottish form of Larix decidua, Polish subspecies of L. decidua, L. sibirica and L. broad-scaly (L. decidua and L. kaempferi hybrid) are presented. The range of coverage of the geographical location of the most distanced provenience is more than 5.5 thousand km. It is established that the Polish larch takes a leading place in growth according to the complex growth indicators. The larch is somewhat inferior to it;it is a broad and scaly hybrid. The Siberian larch is significantly slower in its growth. The Scottish form of European larch slightly exceeds the Siberian larch by the height and stem diameter, though it has a noticeably higher density of the stand. At the same time, the presence of the large proportion (27 %) of shrinking trees in Scottish larch provenience, which is significantly higher than in other provinces, suggests that the thinning process might occur in this population in the nearest future, thus bringing it closer to the aggregate growth indicators of Siberian larch. The Polish larch, which gives high rates of growth and productivity when planted in the middle belt of European Russia, is a promising breed for artificial reforestation. The range of the natural spread of the Polish larch species enters the region of the optimum in the area of the genus Larix.

The article presents the analysis of the resource potential of floodplain meadows from various administrative regions of Arkhangelsk region. Studies are based on the data from 197 geobotanical descriptions of 100 m2 trial plots. We have established a range of ecological conditions for the formation of floodplain meadows along ecological gradient scales. The result is presented as an indirect ordination using the method of non-metric scaling. The moistening of soils is a leading factor in the formation of floodplain meadows in comparison with the richness of soils and pasture digression. In total, we detected 251 species of vascular plants from 48 families and 139 genera. Meadow species of plants have different indices of phytocenotic significance (for all species of the general floral list and for individual regions). The foxtail meadow is the absolute leader for all areas. The taxonomic floristic analysis showed the coincidence of only two families in the spectra of the general floral list and the flora of the entire region. All types of plants are divided into categories: medicinal, decorative, tanning, dyeing, technical, cultivated, honey, food, forage, weed and poisonous species. We have identified areas with a massive spread of poisonous species (Kholmogorskii, Primorskii districts) with weeds of small-stalked herbs (Verkhnetoemskii, Krasnoborskii, Pinezhskii districts), and with coarse-grained species (Pinezhskii, Primorskii districts). Grass stands of highest quality are located in Plesetskiy region.

The purpose of the article is to conduct a retrospective analysis and generalize information about the parks of Irpin, including their location, size, historical aspects of establishment and development, planning structure, current state and composition of greenery, importance for the city and the level of socio-cultural needs of modern society; formulating conclusions on the prospects of their preservation and optimization. Methodology. The study of the historical aspects and current state of Irpin parks (retrospective analysis) was established during 2019-2021. Field and analytical methods were used, in particular, most of the historical information about the formation and development of parks was obtained from scientific literature sources and archival materials, and the assessment of the current state was carried out as a result of own route surveys. The scientific novelty is to reveal the need to study the Irpin parks, as important centers of historical, socio-cultural and recreational value, in the context of their protection and preservation under the conditions of powerful modern urban transformation of the city. In addition, for the first time in decades, a retrospective analysis of five Irpin parks was conducted, and the collected material was grouped in one publication, which is important for current and future research. Conclusions. A retrospective analysis of five parks in Irpin was carried out, in particular: Volodymyr Pravyk City Park; Dubky City Park of Culture and Recreation; Victory Park; Mikhail Stelmakh Park; Park of Heroes. The study found that the founding of these parks dates back to the twentieth century, respectively, today they represent a significant historical, socio-cultural and recreational value of the city, continuing to exist fully. However, in the process of adaptation to modern needs of society under the influence of constant urban transformation of the city, currently characterized by significant changes in planning structure and functional zoning, elements of landscaping, the composition of greenery, including cultivated dendroflora. Given these changes, it is extremely important to take care of the preservation of parks (territorial integrity and cultural dendroflora), which can be achieved through the widespread promotion of parks among local residents, reconstruction (fragmentary or complex) to maintain the proper condition of parks and their compliance with the requirements of modern society. It was established that the establishment of these parks was carried out in the twentieth century, so today they are a significant historical, socio-cultural and recreational value of the city, continue to exist fully.

Author(s): Olga V. Ermolaeva,Natalia Yu. Shmakova / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 6 (167)/2017

The productivity (linear and weight increments) of Polytrichum commune in Khibiny mountains forest belt is estimated. The annual increment in 2013–2016, depending on the habitat, amounted to 30–46 mm/year and to 11–23 mg/year in dry mass. The length and the mass increments are the largest in the forest meadow. The linear and the weight increments during vegetation periods occur simultaneously but at different rates. A period with the ultimate growth rate can occur at any time of the growing season and depends on the temperature regime at the beginning of the vegetation period. It was revealed that the transition to this period was noted after the accumulation of a certain effective temperature sum. A high growth rate of the stem was observed at the air temperature of 11–18 °C and precipitations of 0,5–2,5 mm per day. At the end of August the linear growth of the plant slowed down. The autumn growth processes are connected with the increasing mass increment;

СLIMATE CHANGE ASSOCIATED WITH RISING OCEAN LEVELS - A THREAT TO COASTAL AREAS

СLIMATE CHANGE ASSOCIATED WITH RISING OCEAN LEVELS - A THREAT TO COASTAL AREAS

Author(s): Clarissa Pickett / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2020

Even if we were to stop emitting green house gasses this moment, we have already committed to 2m of sea level rise in the future due to the lag of sea level rise response to warming. This means that each year we continue to emit mass amounts of greenhouse gasses, that inevitable number will rise, the average level of the ocean is increasing at an unprecedented rate due to anthropogenic forcing. There are two major uncertainties associated with rise, one is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions (RCPs), and another is the likelihood of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melting. Though scientists are able to make predictions through simulation, it is unknown how fast they will break apart (Velicogna 2018).As communities are threatened by climate change, so are the baylands and their wildlife. Although a few feet of sea level rise may not sound threatening, one meter of rise can affect ecosystems hundreds of meters inland depending on surface slope. Reduced sediment, warmer temperatures, and storm surge will have a detrimental effect on habitat. Restoration practices can be used to increase the Bay's vitality, but rebuilding or protecting development could potentially cost billions of dollars (Velicogna 2018). Many stakeholders are discouraged by short term upfront cost for investment in protection, rather than focusing on long term benefit and avoiding damage expenditure. When choosing a course of action there will be tradeoffs between competing uses, near and long term benefits, and which ecosystems will be protected. Successful implementation will be made possible through adaptive management, the process of learning by doing and utilizing the results to improve tactics. An action strategy for the Bay in the long term will need to focus more on restoring transition zones and realigning levees as well as public outreach (Sea Level Rise Guide, 2018).

Author(s): Amelia Licheva / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 1/2021

The text focuses on several recently published novels and a book of essays, which have provoked reactions and debates both in Bulgaria and around the world. It tries to see how writers rationalize the pandemic at the very beginning of its emergence. For most authors topics such as politics and ecology are important, because according to them the Covid crisis is the result of all other crises of today's world, and most of all, of the irresponsible human attitude towards nature and other human beings. Not accidentally – in their visions – it heralds new changes in the human and in the acceleration of the dystopian wave in literature.

The increase in anthropogenic impact on aquatic ecosystems causes significant alterations in the composition and structure of hydrobiont groups. These processes are characteristic of the hydrobiocenoses of the Uday River, the valley of which lies within the National Nature Park "Pyryatynsky", established in 2009 in the Pyryatyn district of Poltava region. Within this protected area it is convenient to carry out continuous monitoring of changes in anthropogenic load on shore ecosystems of the river. One of the most convenient monitoring groups is zooplankton, which is one of the essential components of the trophic networks of aquatic ecosystems and which is the feeding basis of planktonophagous and young fish. The object of this research was the major groups of zooplankton: rotifers (class Eurotatoria), cladocerans (class Branchiopoda, order Cladocera), different age stages of copepods (class Copepoda), ostracods (class Ostracoda). Zooplankton were collected in the daytime in spring (mid April), summer (end of July) and autumn (late September) 2016 within eight research stations. As a result of the conducted research, 69 species of zooplankton were registered within the littoral water area of the Uday River. Monogonont rotifers numbered 19 (27.5%) species, bdelloid rotifers (subclass Bdelloidea), cladocerans – 33 (47.9%) species, copepods – 17 (24.6%). According to the faunal spectrum in the zooplankton groups, representatives of the cladoceran complex predominated. This is due to the favourable conditions for the development of filtrators, of which a considerable part is cladocerans. Three species of rotifers were identified in Poltava region for the first time: Beauchampiella eudactylota (Gosse, 1886), Dipleuchlanis propatula (Gosse, 1886), Mytilina acanthophora (Hauer, 1938). During the spring, 33 species of zooplankton were collected: rotifers – 10 species, cladocerans – 14, copepods – 9 species. In summer 41 species were registered, including rotifers – 10, cladocerans – 18, and copepods – 13. In autumn 37 species were found: 6 species of rotifers, cladocerans – 21 and copepods – 10. The species composition of the zooplankton in different seasons had a low similarity, as evidenced by Jaccard index: spring and autumn (J = 25,4), spring and autumn (J = 34,5), and summer and autumn (J = 34,6). In the spring, pelagic (36.3%) and phytophilic (45.6%) groups prevailed, and phytophilic dominated in summer (41.4%) and autumn (48.7%). Of the various groups classified according to feeding type, representatives of the peaceful group dominated in all the studied seasons, in spring comprising 69.7%, in summer – 65.8%, and in autumn – 73%. The density and biomass of zooplankton of the Uday River were “low” in spring and summer, and "very low" – in autumn.

Author(s): Vitalina Igorevna Loshenko,Andrey Valentinovich Sakharov,Elena Ivanovna Ryabchikova,Alexandr Evgenievich Prosenko / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 3/2016

This article presents the results of experimental modeling which demonstrated the influence of fluctuations in hydrothermal regime and lead levels exceeding in the environment on the state of terminal parts of forebrain neurons in Siberian sturgeon. The purpose of this work is to investigate synaptic forebrain plasticity in Siberian sturgeon within changing parameters of informational environment. According to the obtained results, an influence of environmental factors leads to adaptive remodeling of synaptic means. Throughout thirty days of exposure the adaptive change of synaptoarchitectonics has been identified as incomplete. This was proved by the methods of morphology and physiology on the cellular and ontogenetic levels. The significant role of free radical mechanism was demonstrated on the realization of synaptic forebrain plasticity in Siberian sturgeon. The use of the new generation multifunctional sulfur-containing antioxidant «Thiophane» during the realization of reactions of the adaptation syndrome allows to regulate the level of free radical activity in neurons. In conclusion, the authors justify the possibility of using antioxidant «Thiophane» for control of synaptic forebrain plasticity in sturgeons in conditions of changing the environmental factors.
