An Unknown Census of the Population of Przemyśl from mid-1918

An Unknown Census of the Population of Przemyśl from mid-1918

Author(s): Zdzisław Budzyński,Jolanta Kamińska-Kwak / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

The main source for this article is a population census carried out in Przemyśl in 1918, previously unused in any scientific research. Using a survey method, it encompassed single households; only some of the material exists to this day, a larger part stored in the Sanok Archive, and a smaller in the National Archive in Przemyśl. The census combined the elements of the earlier “State of Souls” (status animarum) in relation to households and the more modern type of Austrian survey to which new categories were added; its original form enables new methods for analyzing the local population of that area. The circumstances in which the census was carried out are unknown; we can assume that it was conducted by the local magistrate, due to food shortages and mass migration of the population (including the military) to the city. The surviving 1,163 cards enable us to pinpoint personal data from the respondents, such as sex, age, religion and nationality, place of birth and address, and in some cases social status and profession.

Anadolu’da Ortaçağ Lojistik Merkezleri; Selçuklu Liman Kentleri

Author(s): Koray Özcan / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 53/2017

In the Seljuk Period, the Anatolia urban network and transportation system taken from Byzantine Empire were re–organized by the multi–purpose economic policies in order to increase the international trading potentials and develop the agricultural production. So, it is said that the port cities of Mediterranean and Black Sea were played a key role in Seljuk both economic and military policies. In this context the port cities functioned and acted like logistic centers for the overseas military operations and international trading activities in the urban network and transportation system in Anatolia. In that vein, this study attempts to examine the spatial patterns and functional characteristics of the port cities under Seljuk control in Anatolia. Here, the methodological framework is mostly based on examination of the original historical documents, archaeological findings and architectural remains with the numismatics, and also transferring those data on to the maps. It is considered that this study is contributed to identify the port cities with locational conditions for logistic center potentials in the context of the historical geography of Anatolia.

ANALIZA GUSTOĆE PONIKAVA NA SJEVERNOM VELEBITU I SENJSKOM BILU

Author(s): Sanja Faivre / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1/1992

The analysis of the dolines density on the North Velebit and Senjsko Bilo is shown. On 947 km2 has been registrated 18 059 dolines. One of the basic characteristic is the regular ranges of dolines, principally in direction NW-SE, and the regular change of the zones of bigger and smaller density. This indicate that the influence of the fault zones is essencial. The disposition of the ranges of dolines density has an exceptional morphostructural importance. There are three main fault zones: 1. Melnice-Kuterevo NW-SE, 2. Krasno-Lipovo polje WNW-ESE, 3. Bakovac fault zone E-W. The highest intensity of the dolines density is related to a wider area of convergention of three mentioned fault zones i.e. to the SE edge of Senjsko bilo, weider area of Lipovo polje and Bakovac.

Analiza minerałów ciężkich jako metoda określania źródła osadów wodnolodowcowych w obszarze między Piotrkowem Trybunalskim, Radomskiem a Przedborzem

Author(s): Andrzej Barczuk,Lucyna Wachecka-Kotkowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 103/2015

The paper presents results of the heavy minerals analysis separated of 39 fluvioglacial sediments samples collected at 19 sites in the Piotrków Trybunalski, Radomsko and Przedbórz area. A significant variability of transparent minerals (ca 14–82,5%) and opaque (ca 17,5–86%) have been shown in the set. Comparying to loess around Przedbórz area as to erosion resistance, transparent minerals were divided into five groups. Additionally, carbonates and phosphates as a local substratum index has been added to the classification of a group of 6. Spectra in all groups proved an advantage of Scandinavian detritic material, which was found some link between the resistance and the distance minerals and sediment transport dynamics and their age. Coming up to 40% of biotites and chlorites in glaciofluvial sediments interpreted as synsedimentary aeolian admixtures. Przedstawiono wyniki analizy minerałów frakcji ciężkiej wyseparowane z 39 próbek osadów wodnolodowcowych pobranych w 19 stanowiskach między Piotrkowem Trybunalskim, Radomskiem a Przedborzem. Analiza wykazała duże zróżnicowanie udziału minerałów nieprzezroczystych (14–82,5%) i przezroczystych (17,5–86%).

Petrographic studies of indicator erratics in glacial sediments revealed the existence of at least two lithotypes of glacial tills (marked S and O/W), differing in source area of moraine material. The older one (S), represented by glacial till in Mąkolice, was deposited by the last advance of South Polish Glaciation in the area. The younger lithotype (O/W) includes glacial sediments of Middle Polish Complex. Among them, two varieties (sublitothypes), probably deposited by separate ice masses (but not ice streams), can be distinguished. These sublitotyphes are clearly recognizable only in the southern part of the area under research. Their relative spatial distribution and petrographic features confirm the validity of the conclusions based on the analysis of the relief, which suggests that the ice-sheet during the Middle Polish Glaciation (Odranian/Wartanian) entered the Piotrków region from two directions.

Andrew Archibald Paton: Lika i Senj u putopisu iz 1849. godine

Author(s): Juraj Lokmer / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1/2018

The great interest of English travel writers from the end of the 18th century, and especially from the beginning and mid-19th century in the Eastern Adriatic coast culminated at the endof it and at the beginning of the 20th century. The motives for travelling were varied: from the familiarisation of "exotic" regions, the discovery of unknown European cultural heritage, all the way to the targeted recording of the conditions and relationships of political powers in the Austrian Empire, its relationship with the neighbouring Ottoman Empire, and the strengthening of the selfconfidence of the Slavic peoples in relation to the Hungarian and Austrian hegemony and the Slavic peoples in the Ottoman Empire. British diplomat, secret intelligence officer of the British Embassyin Vienna, with significant military-diplomatic experience in the Middle East (Syria, Egypt) and in Serbia, Andrew Archibald Paton (1811-1874) travelled, in 1846 and 1847, the Eastern Adriatic coast, the Dalmatian Hinterland (Zagora) and Lika primarily with the task of gathering information about the material condition of that part of the Austrian Empire, especially the Adriatic ports. Hebegan the journey began by carriage from Vienna to Zadar, continued to Kotor, visited Montenegroand returned to Zadar from where, via Lika, he travelled to Rijeka, Trieste and ended in Graz and Vienna. He was the first Briton to visit the interior of Croatia, particularly the Military Frontier and Lika. Exploring these regions Paton described with documentary precision the people and regions with words and pictures, he noted some details from the cultural heritage and local history, which he mostly gleaned from the travelogues of previous visitors and literature which he was able to consult in Vienna. He also described the natural phenomena (Plitvice Lakes) and the beauty of the landscape (Plješivica, Velebit) for which he also demonstrated a fair amount of literary penchant. Particularly interesting are his descriptions of the towns (Gospić, Otočac, Senj), as well as smaller places – villages (Vrhovine, Korenica, Zavalje). He published this in a major work: Highlands and islands of the Adriatic: including Dalmatia, Croatia, and the Southern Provinces of the Austrian Empire Highlands and islands of the Adriatic: including Dalmatia, Croatia, and the Southern Provinces of the Austrian Empire, Volumes 1 and 2, which he published in London in 1849. This work by received well by the business, political and public readership and by 1862 Paton published an expanded edition in London - Researches on the Danube and the Adriatic; or, Contributionsto the Modern History of Hungary and Transylvania, Dalmatia and Croatia, Servia and Bulgaria2 volumes, in which Paton describes the geographical-historical look of South East Europe, his observations, especially the economic and political views of the existing conditions and future of these countries. Paton’s description of Lika and Senj is not extensive, but it is concise, critical and full of personal ponderings about the current situation, as well as the potentials of these regions. testimonies about the regions and people, and they are not only historical documents, but it is also an insight into the views and thoughts of others, foreigners about these regions and peoples. It is the documentation which significantly influenced and gradually formed the public opinion of the English-speaking regions and further a field. For us today these attitudes and thoughts are slightly strange, often incomprehensible and unacceptable, and so they significantly influenced the political decisions of Anglo-Saxon countries(Great Britain, the USA), and of their adherents in the past, and they can also be recognised in the political, economic and cultural intentions and procedures of these countries, especially of Great Britain. In this paper the author provides a translation of parts of this work with descriptions of Lika and the town of Senj with comments and the necessary explanations, plus a quite extensive bibliography of British and American authors who had visited and written about the Croatian regions from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

This article presents the results of measurements of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of Quaternary sediments collected from 13 sites, located in zones I–IV of glacigenic forms in SE of the Łódź Region. Based on statistical analysis and graphical position of the principal axes of ellipsoids illustrating the magnetic susceptibility tensors, recreated directions of transport for 206 samples, mainly of glacial sediment of different ages and types. The usefulness of AMS analysis in determining the direction of transport in clasts of the till has been proved and also to verification of the directional results of other measurements in the sediments layered.

Antické poznávanie Dunaja od 8. storočia pred n. l. do 1. storočia n. l.

Author(s): Michal Habaj / Language(s): Slovak / Issue: 2/2018

The Danube was one of the most important rivers in ancient geography. Its upper and middle course divided the Romans from the tribes to the north, while its lower course separated the Greek world from the Scythians. In ancient thought it was not only a real natural barrier, but also the boundary of the oikumené, the meeting place between the civilized world and the mythical north. The study considers the phases of the process of discovering the Danube from its first mentions until Augustus, when its whole length was known as a result of Roman expansion. The whole process of exploration is evaluated on the basis of ancient sources, epigraphy and archaeological finds. Relevant events are mentioned, and the sources of various ideas and traditions are analysed.

ANTİKÇAĞ KOLKHİS’TE BOĞA FİGÜRÜ

Author(s): Gülseren Mutlu / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 41/2019

Since prehistoric times, the bull, which has always held a priviliged position, appears mainly in the recorded resources of Kolkhis dating back to Antique times, on the coins and legends of the same period. When we think about the cultural effects of the nations coming with migrations to the region, we will try to convey the traces of this animal which we see as having an important place in the value perception of the society. The history witnessed the migration of Hurries to the region in masses and the raids by the Hittites and Urartus, two rooted civilisations in Anatolia. The bull was regarded as sacred not only in Kolkhis region, but in Mesopotamian communities beginning with Sumerians, Anatolian and Egyptian civilisations it was accepted as the symbol of deities to a large extent, and of power, productivity and fertility.

Antonio Pigafetta, a Cultural Mediator During the Expedition of Magellan-Elcano?

Author(s): Amalia Drăgulănescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Although it is difficult to legitimize lately, in a way, who the supreme title holder is of the first circumnavigator among Magellan and Elcano, each one has his undeniable merits. Beyond the difficult route and the obstacles encountered, or the successes achieved on several levels (geographic, anthropological, economic, etc.), what stands above all is the significance of self-discovery and of the Other. In order to facilitate the encompassing of the significance of the discoveries, what interests most is the message, sometimes apparently codified from the point of view of writing, of a message of hope for the descendants, of a certain godliness to the divinity, and of the idea that such civilizing gestures could ever be repeated. The emblem of this testimony, but also of a kind of paradoxical happy testament of the supreme sailors, or of the several unknown illustrious people, is, of course, the fierce and powerful Antonio Pigafetta who, together with his masters in navigation and survival beyond human limits, completes the splendid earthly trinity of the explorers.

Antropocen: procesno stanje na rubu povijesti Zemlje?

Author(s): Peter Sloterdijk / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 25/2020

Archaeometric analysis of mosaic tesserae and a ‘red marble’ decorative stone from the Bizere monastery (Arad County, Romania)

Author(s): Bernadett Bajnóczi,Dorottya GYÖRKÖS,Viktória MOZGAI,Mária Tóth / Language(s): English / Issue: Special/2015

A large variety of building and decorative materials, including mosaic tesserae, were discovered during the archaeological excavation of the medieval Bizere monastery. In order to assess the material usage for the decorative elements of the monastery, several tesserae made of rocks and ceramics and a “red marble” decorative stone were studied using optical and cathodoluminescence microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe, and stable isotope analyses. Most of the studied tesserae consist of metamorphic rocks such as white marble, quartzite, greenschist, hornfels, and “serpentine marble” (ophicalcite). Magmatic rocks (basalt) and sedimentary rocks (sandstone, limestone, and breccia) were also identified. Based on the geology of the region we can assume that most of the rocks have a local source in the Southern Apuseni Mountains or in the Poiana Rusca Mountains. Moreover, the Mureş Valley, that is the alluvial pebbles of the Mureş River, could also be a possible source for the rocks. Some of the white marbles may originate from the Southern Carpathians (Bucova/Zeicani). The “red marble” found at the site is a bioclastic nodular limestone containing a large amount of Middle Jurassic Bositra shell fragments. Its petrographic and stable isotope characteristics point to a distant source, the Gerecse Mountains in Hungary. The possible local or distant sources of some white marble mosaics and other unique tesserae made of “serpentine marble” and black-and-white breccia are still to be identified. The ceramics studied are diverse in appearance including grey, red, and sandwich-structured mosaic tesserae and a red brick. All but one was made from clay intentionally tempered with sand, most probably from the Mureş River. The phase composition of the ceramics suggests a firing temperature of ≤650-700 °C.

Archiwalne materiały kartograficzne źródłem do rekonstrukcji przestrzeni dawnych wsi w strefie zabudowy miejskiej

Author(s): Kamil Nieścioruk / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2013

The paper describes a possibility of using post-war cartographic materials (but not only) in a process of tracing and analyzing the remnants of the past landscape in urbanized areas (the case of Lublin) and virtual revival of such landscapes. The process of gathering and selecting materials is described, including cartometric quality discussion and an idea of supporting analyses with field works is discussed. Th e analyses mentioned above are divided into visual (qualitative) and quantitative ones. The former includes overlaying cartographic materials to check for remnants and to support the hypothesis posed during fi eld-works. The latter – a comparison of digital elevation models based on early maps. The final part deals with constructing 3D visualization of past landscape based on maps, aerial and regular photographs and additional, non-cartographic materials.
