The Balkan Wars (1912–1913) triggered in Bulgaria and Greece unseen enthusiasm and hope for prosperity, as well as for the ‘liberation of our brothers living under yoke”. In the Bulgarian society the Balkan Wars have left a deep emotional trauma. But how does the Greek society evaluate these events? How durable are the Greek military victories and do they nurture new internal or external problems? How do the people in Greece evaluate their own contribution to the success in the Wars and how do they see themselves and their neighbors? What is the relationship between tradition and modernity and what is the place of humanism in this military clash? Is the image of the war undergoing a process of democratization?Seeking for the answers of these and other questions, we decided to present a Greek album from the period. The album is dedicated to the Balkan Wars and remains poorly known. We hope that the analysis of the illustrations in it will enable us to trace the attempt of the authors of the album to influence the audience and will thus allow to see the Balkan Wars through the eyes of the Greeks from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Scientific Archives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences began its work with the foundation of the Bulgarian Literary Society in Braila in September 1869. Its task is to find, process and offer for use all the materials on the history of the scientific thought in Bulgaria and the history of the BAS. The Scientific Archive preserves the archival documents of the institutes of the BAS as well as the personal collections of academicians, corresponding members and professors; it does scientific and technical processing, estimates the value of the archival documents and restores them. The archive organizes the use of the archival documents for scientific research, reference and other purposes, prepares documentary publications and exhibitions of documents.The cultural heritage preserved in the BAS is a national treasure and we are responsible for its protection.This article examines only archival collections with ethnographic materials and researches. It is an invitation to researchers for future studies.

The family and the relations in it have always been in the focus of the social sciences and humanities. They attract particular interest in cases of mixed marriages between individuals from different confessional communities. The present study will pay attention to mixed marriages between Orthodox Christians and Jews. It is based on the history of a family from the city of Sofia, the attitude of the spouses towards religion and the impact of these relations on the children in the family in the 20th century.

This article addresses disability in a Middle Eastern context. It interrogates disability and identity from a Bedouin perspective. The author relays her experiences with a physical disability and society’s stigmatization of different bodies. More often than not, this usually creates psychological traumas and a complex terrain of emotional tensions when dealing with society’s oppression of individuals with disability. The author engages with a discursive discussion of the struggles of navigating spaces of shame, the traumas of stigma, and ultimately healing in finding a voice that is separate from the collective.

The paper deals with practices of vegetable gardening in the village of Mezdreya, Northwestern Bulgaria, before collectivization in 1958. The main question is how gardening affects social relations and, conversely, how getting into particular social relationships “makes” the garden. The interrelation between the plant world in gardens, the gardening practices, the economic interests of families, the social relations within and between families, people’s lifestyle, etc. have been studied. The article presents the interactions between families in the process of growing vegetables in irrigated gardens and in seed exchange, the association between neighbours and collective work in common benefit, the distribution of labour activities in the family by sex and age.

The article analyzes the specific urban agriculture practice of bio-gardening in schools, which continues the tradition of experimental and teaching plots in schools and combines the basic effects of urban agriculture: social, health-related, economic and ecological. Above all, this tradition illustrates the combined social benefits of urban agriculture related to education, upbringing, and social integration. The data presented in the article are drawn from the findings of research (in-depth interviews and focus groups) conducted in the framework of the project Urban Agriculture as a Strategy for Improving the Quality of Life of Urban Communities, financed by the National Research Fund. The data refer to bio-gardens in schools on the territory of Sofia Municipality.

Voucher system of education implies the use of vouchers as instruments of financing public and private education. Unlike the traditional ways of financing education, the voucher system creates the assumptions for increasing the freedom of choice regarding educational programs within different levels of education. Paper will use scientific methods of systematization and analysis of existing literature regarding school vouchers, in order to give a critical review of the influence of vouchers on increasing the competitiveness of education. The paper will also present the results of the research of student and parental attitudes about towards voucherization of education. Research sample includes respondents from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Croatia and Republic of Serbia. Along with the conclusion, the paper also offers some recommendations regarding the use of vouchers for the improvement of local education systems.
