HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY SUBJECTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN INTERWAR BESSARABIA (1918-1928)

In interwar Bessarabia, history and geography played a considerable role in the creation of national sentiment. In all regions of Romania, these subjects began to be taught in schools starting with the 1918-1919 school year. In all secondary schools, the History of the Romanians was introduced instead of the History of Russia and the Geography of the Romanian Countries, instead of the geography of the homeland. National history was taught not only to students, but also to Bessarabian teachers, who wanted to serve in the villages of the region. These disciplines did not aim at the transmission of information, but at the formation of character and love of country. During the school inspections, the inspectors confirmed the fact that history and geography were well rooted in the consciousness of students and teachers, in other cases, they noticed their impassiveness or ignorance in the development of these Romanian objects.

Placing students’emotions at the heart of the learning process, a challenge for teachers

School is the place where emotions can constitute an obstacle to learning or facilitate it. Feelings of insecurity and even fear are often the cause of failure. It is then a question of trying to control parasite emotions in order to promote a meaningful and more serene learning. This article focuses on students’emotions as processes which, given their cerebral implementations in relation to the systems involved in motivation, attention and memory are at the heart of learning process. Researches suggest that emotional skills are beneficial to both well-being and academic performance. Emotions support attention, working memory, encoding, memory consolidation or processes related to executive control (inhibition). Those cognitive processes are also necessary for academic learning. Emotions therefore accompany the students within the classroom, and may interfere with learning or consolidate it. Research on emotions, their cerebral bases and functions, invite us to question the idea according to which emotions hinder school learning; on the contrary, even if emotions can indeed sometimes affect learning, experimental results suggest that they often facilitate cognitive processes such as attention and memory, which are essential for learning. Moreover, the fact that emotions have an important role in the process of learning suggests that it is important for the student to be able to know, control and use them, in an academic context.

Modalități de dezvoltare a abilităților de comunicare la elevii din familii vulnerabile

Within families affected by socio-economic and cultural disadvantage, proper communication situations are infrequent or likely to trigger negative emotional effects. Children growing up in such families are less involved in communicative activities with their parents and may be emotionally inhibited, thus causing mothers to complain about the youngsters’ passivity (Piff, Moskowitz, 2018). Researchers have put forward several methods for preparing parents in disadvantaged families to optimize verbal communication with their children as well as to improve parent-teacher communication. In order to manage the quality of communication in the case of families vulnerable due to socio-economic and cultural disadvantage, pre-school staff, teachers, speech therapists and school counselors should establish personalized programmes meant to develop the communicative abilities of both parents and children

Axiomatizing the Education System: Analysis, Taxonomy or Professional Development?

The author starts by attempting to Axiomatize the Education System and by clearly outlining what is meant by Axioms and the Axiomatic Method. Essentially. he takes an Axiomatic Approach to defining Axiomatization. He then describes how a facilitated workshop was used to agree the key features of the education system: – a list of short statements (say 100) about education; – cognate groups (say 10) that are used to sort the statements; and – longer statements that describe those groups. The longer statements are initially given the status First Order Axioms, while short statements are given the status of Second Order Axioms. The First Order Axioms were then grouped into: – Fundamental Axioms; – Structural Axioms; and – Functional Axioms. The main body of the paper then clearly articulates: – those First Order Axioms: Pupils; Education; The State; Subsidiarity; The School; Leadership and Management; The Curriculum; Teachers and Teaching; Assessment and Accreditation and Monitoring and Evaluation; along with – the accompanying Second Order Axioms that were generated when the author participated in their own facilitated workshop. The author also provides the diagrammatic overview of the education system that resulted from the facilitated workshop. He concludes that although the approach can be useful, it has its limitations: a number of the key requirements of Axiomatic Systems cannot be met. The education system is so complex that the Axiomatic System derived from an Axiomatic Approach cannot be Consistent and Independent; nor can all the statements be shown to follow logically from statements that are, in turn, the logical result of other statements. The author finally concludes that, although the approach is useful, the terms Axiomatic System and First and Second Order Axioms should be replaced by Taxonomy and First and Second Order Statements. However, he does suggest that developing a Taxonomy of Educational Objectives could be very useful for: – providing an agreed high-level description of the education system; and – in-service education and staff development purposes.

Компетентностният подход в класната стая на XXI век – междудисциплинарно учене

The aim of the article is to present one of the best learning and teaching practices for utilising the competency-based learning approach in uppersecondary education through interdisciplinary learning and teaching. Based on the curricula for the 11th grade in academic profiles Bulgarian Language and Literature and English Language and Literature, and the curriculum for general education in Civic Education, as well as on The European Reference Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning and Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) a series of lessons in the abovementioned subjects is carried out at “Thomas Jefferson” English Language School, Sofia, on the topic of “Shared Values. Human Dignity”. The final lesson is conducted simultaneously in Bulgarian and English by four teachers with four groups of students from different academic profiles integrating new technologies in the learning and teaching process – a shared virtual Google Classroom. The teachers’ goal is to develop students’ civic competencies as well as their cultural awareness and expression competencies based on their acquired multilingual competencies.

This approach aims to validate several aspects, including: the nuance of notions related to historical events, the importance of active-participative methods absolutely necessary in the assimilation of information related to historical contents, the application of modern didactic strategies in classes, the importance of the existence in each school unit of a history office etc. Moreover, through this article, we try to highlight that a good knowledge of the past cannot be achieved today without highlighting functional skills. We must take into account the abundance of information that has emerged as a result of free access to the Internet. The important thing is to have the ability to select the true ones and to have confidence in the knowledge received in the classes.
