Author(s): Krzysztof Dziurzynski,Bernadeta Rudzińska-Filipek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2023

The COVID-19 pandemic, and particularly the period of emergency remote teaching, have shown how Poland’s educational system coped with teaching curricula in reliance on new technologies. Past lockdown the general education system heralded success, but education of children and youths with special educational needs seemed to go unnoticed. The process of education had to be carried on under lockdown conditions often with direct (in-person) involvement of teachers, class teachers as well as tutors at boarding schools. This article presents Part Two of the record on research in this area. The main goal of this article was to learn the opinions of over 50 parents of students with special educational needs on the ways and the effectiveness of emergency remote teaching and to come up with ideas for future improvements to organization of distance education of students at special education centres. The following three queries were set for examination ahead of this research: (1) General assessment of preparedness of special education centres for distance education needs; (2) Assessment of distance education quality at special education centres and out of the centres’ premises; (3) Assessment of communications quality at special education centres. This research relied on diagnostic survey method (Bauman, Pilch, 2001, p. 79). The applied technique was survey (Bauman, Pilch, 2001, p. 96). The research was conducted in the period October – December 2020. This research met the criteria of evaluation research and can be defined as ex-post evaluation (Haber, 2009, p. 142). Survey for parents comprised 26 ques-tions including 24 closed-ended questions, two open-ended questions plus three demographic questions (the child’s sex, school form and group number). Research material was statistically analysed in reliance on SPSS v. 27 software.

Comparative Impact of Virtual and Face-To-Face Education on The Academic Performance and Perception of Accounting Students at A Peruvian University During the Pandemic

Author(s): Carlos Alberto Hinojosa Salazar,Benjamín Roldan Polo Escobar,Heisely Mori Pelaez,Juan Manuel Buendía Fernández,Robert Wagner Ocadio Acosta,Consuelo González Camacho / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2024

The present study compares the impact of virtual and face-to-face education modalities on the academic performance and perception of accounting students at the Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a mixed methodological approach, quantitative and qualitative data from 98 students were analyzed, evaluating their academic performance, interaction, feedback and satisfaction in both modalities. The results show that students in the virtual modality obtained higher academic performance, attributed to the flexibility of online education. However, interaction and feedback were perceived as more effective in the face-to-face modality. Students valued the flexibility of virtual education, but emphasized the importance of personal interaction and the traditional classroom environment to maintain concentration and academic engagement. This study concludes that both modalities have strengths and weaknesses, and suggests that a hybrid combination could offer a more complete educational experience. Improvements in feedback and assessment in virtual environments are recommended, as well as encouraging active participation through interactive technologies.

Developing Social and Emotional Skills of Students with Learning Difficulties using a Digital Learning Program

Author(s): Abdullah Ahmed Almulla,Mohamad Ahmad Saleem Khasawneh / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

This study investigated the impact of using a digital learning program on the development of social and emotional skills among students with learning disabilities in Irbid City, Jordan. Using an experimental design, this research examined how changing one or more independent factors affected the dependent variable. The sampling method we used was a stochastic one. To take part in the research, we randomly chose two classrooms. One classroom served as the experimental group and the other as the control group; with 20 pupils each. There was a significant difference in the average scores for life skills, which include social skills, independent skills, and emotional capacities, between the control and experimental groups. The results suggest that the students in the experimental group possess a substantial amount of practical life skills. The findings provide credence to the idea that students with learning disabilities may benefit from digital learning technologies by increasing their social, emotional, and self-reliance capabilities and hence their adaptive capacities.

Particularități ale lecțiilor on-line la disciplina Muzică și mișcare

Author(s): Lucian Ghișa,Dalia Ioana Ghișa / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 1/2022

The present research aims to contribute to the optimization of online teaching regarding the Music and Movement subject. The Music and movement class activities are aimed to facilitate the acquisition of important general skills, such as: learning children’s songs and simple elements of musical language, performing children’s songs, with age-specific means and in order to express ideas, feelings and experiences through music and movement, individually or in groups. We highlighted in this research the provisions of the program, insisting on the competencies that need to be acquired. In this regard, the curriculum expresses a series of contents with specific activities, which can be approached in the classroom according to each level of learning. The skills that students have to acquire in the Music and Movement class formed the basis of the concerns which emerged due to the pandemic situation (isolation at home), because at first the resources available were not known, as neither were the methods and means by which to achieve them, taking into account the fact that the transition from traditional classes to those in the online environment was sudden.

Munca profesorului cu sine însuși în predarea online Jurnal de pandemie

Munca profesorului cu sine însuși în predarea online Jurnal de pandemie

Author(s): Cătălina-Elena Mihăilă / Language(s): Romanian Issue: Sp. Issue/2023

By radiographing the pandemic period and, implicitly, teaching online, we can categorize them as a combination of lessons, challenges and "inner struggles." In other words, we can discuss this as a period of adaptation, change and adaptation to change, exit from the comfort zone and, last but not least, reinvention. The work of the teacher himself does not accidentally refer to a masterpiece in the training and education of any dramatic artist. The teacher can be seen as both a director and an actor. This "work" brings into question the continuous work of the teacher with himself, a work of knowledge, re-education and invention of his own instruments both internal and external. This remote or online teaching required a different kind of communication, a "pseudo-communication". From this point of view, we can note the importance of directing and organizing the teacher's own inner laboratory so that he succeeds in arousing the inner universes of the student. Moreover, we can discuss the reinvention of both the teacher and the educational forms and means.

EDUCATIONAL COMMUNICATION DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. RESULTS OF AN EMPIRICAL STUDY AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

EDUCATIONAL COMMUNICATION DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. RESULTS OF AN EMPIRICAL STUDY AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Author(s): Alexandrina Mihaela Popescu,Gabriela Motoi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Any relationship or situation is maintained by the force of communication. In contemporary society, communication as a form of connection is essential. The importance of communication was highlighted by the changes it underwent during the COVID-19 pandemic period. It is very important to identify the changes that the communication has undergone, the teacher-student and student-student relationship, that has not happened in the classroom environment (face to face) but has passed in the online environment. A whole new world of communication has been opened to all those involved in the educational process. The issue of online school communication has become more than a concern. The real problem has now become what we say, how we say and especially how much we say and how long we need to achieve bilateral communication in the context of educational with a help of a computer, notebook or tablet. Communication is a continuous process of sending and receiving messages that allow teachers and students to share knowledge, attitudes and skills. Effective teaching depends on successful communication. When teachers and students interact, explicit communication takes place. In the context of traditional education, verbal communication is supported by nonverbal communication, they are in a relationship of interdependence, verbal behaviours being used to support or optimize verbal behaviours. In the classroom, the teacher-student, student-student interpersonal relationship is an important element that contributes to the students' learning process. In this study we explore the significance of teachers 'and students' experiences in achieving interpersonal relationships and communication during online education.

CHALLENGES IN ENSURING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Author(s): Maria Constantinescu,Alina Dascălu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The theme of this paper is the knowledge of the difficulties in promoting inclusive education in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Among the groups of students at risk, we will focus on students from rural areas and those with special educational needs (SEN). We will mainly refer to the situation in Romania, but we will also consider models of good practice from other European countries. Children with special educational needs face a number of problems when it comes to their access to the education system. Their integration in a normal school or in a special one is a real challenge for those in this field. The issue of integrating children diagnosed with a disability of any kind is an intensely debated topic both at the political level and in the public space. As for children in rural areas, their access to education is often restricted due to the poverty in which they live.

THE CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION IN THE ERA OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

THE CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION IN THE ERA OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Author(s): Simona TONȚ / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The contemporary world sometimes seems to be a world of permanent transition. It appears to us at the same time unitary (due to the accentuation of the similarities that occurred through globalization) but also diverse (due to the different ways of achieving the transformations determined by the global changes of the world). Today's social world is an exponentially developed world of globalization and technology and information. Social relationships can be seen as local, but they are influenced by global events that are instantly known around the world due to realtime virtual communication. Thus, the relationships and influences between people expand and include people and communities distant in the physical space, but not socially virtual, these being a click away. Today's society has reached such a level of development in most areas of social life that we have to manage the consequences in these areas, namely in education, culture, economy, strongly influenced by information and communication technology. Contemporary societies are in a profound period of change, the development of technology, the Covid-19 pandemic have had a profound effect on education and its consequences are unforeseen. Educational differences and inequality are found in all societies where competition, markets and the family are central institutions. The school is one of the institutions that plays an essential role in society. In this context, it is necessary to mention some of the challenges of education over time and those it has today, in the context of society influenced by technological development and the pandemic context caused by the Sars Cov virus 2. Although initially education was supposed to be a means of reducing social inequalities, the reality is much more complex and paradoxically education sometimes tends to express inequalities to a greater extent than it does to change them. How education actually produces educational inequalities is a reality in the context of today's society strongly marked by the development of technology and the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Exploring the Educational Efficacy and Potential of 24-Hour Hackathon Programming Marathon – HackEmotion

Exploring the Educational Efficacy and Potential of 24-Hour Hackathon Programming Marathon – HackEmotion

Author(s): Małgorzata Przybyła-Kasperek,Rafał Doroz,Agnieszka Lisowska,Grzegorz Machnik,Arkadiusz Nowakowski,Krzysztof Wróbel,Beata Zielosko / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This paper addresses the issue of modern didactics and student motivation for self-learning as well as tackling significant practical challenges. In technical and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, achieving high levels of motivation is particularly important, as students often become overwhelmed by the vast amount of information and opportunities which lead to diminished interest. At the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Silesia in Katowice, a Hackathon – a 24-hour programming marathon – was organized to enhance student engagement. During this event, students confronted a critical problem in modern society, i.e. emotion recognition. The goal was to develop solutions and help for fostering emotion recognition skills in young people with real-world implementation potential. Additionally, students tested their abilities under time pressure, honed their group work competencies, and faced real-time problem-solving scenarios. This paper presents an evaluation of the event’s impact, and analyzes the results of a post-event survey, providing feedback to improve the quality of future Hackathons. The main research questions we posed during the research were: RQ1: At what level of quality was the Hackathon event organized? Werestudents well informed and felt cared for during this event? RQ2: What aspects and properties did motivate students most to take part in events organized at the university like Hackathon? RQ3: What competencies, knowledge and skills were developed by participants in the Hackathon? RQ4: Do students consider issues related to recognizing emotions important and the created applications possible to use in practice? In this paper, we answer these questions using statistical analysis as well as simple machine learning models.

EXPLORING DIMENSIONS OF CHANGING PEDAGOGIES AND CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS IN APPLYING NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN LEARNING

Author(s): Rendani Sipho Netanda / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The need to stay abreast in knowledge economy has led to migration from Open Distance Learning to Open Distance e-Learning at UNISA. Central to this pedagogical change has been the fast advancement in the technological universe, with new media technologies being widely adopted across the globe for bridging the transactional distance between students and the OdeL institution. Using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology as its theoretical lens, the study sought to find answers to the following question: What challenges do NMTS present to OdeL students as they learn using them? The aim is to explore the challenges that OdeL students experience when using new media technologies in learning. Data was collected using indepth interviews with learners. During data analysis, thematic categorisation was used. The study divulged that the many of students from far-flung rural areas still have limited access to NMTs, which impact on their academic performance, and result in low retention and success rates. This finding suggests that for an ODL institution to achieve an increased probability to retain students and success rate, it must support them with access to NMTs. It further suggests that access to NMTs may help students do better in and to complete their studies. These findings unmasked that to bridge transactional distance, ODL institutions must support students, particularly those who are from rural areas by providing them with NMTs. The study limited its focus to UNISA’s Durban hub.

EXAMINING THE INFLUENCE OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON MENTORING NOVICE ACADEMICS IN ONLINE DISTANCE EDUCATION AND LEARNING (ODEL)

Author(s): SALTIEL K.C. MATABOGE / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The purpose of the article seeks to examine the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on mentoring novice academics involved in Open and Distance Learning (ODEL). The main research question guiding this qualitative inquiry is: "How has the Covid-19 pandemic influenced the mentoring experiences of novice academics in the realm of Open and Distance Learning?" The thesis of this article is that the pandemic posed unprecedented challenges which affected the mentoring relationships of novice academics within the context of ODEL. The qualitative data collection methods were utilized to capture the nuanced aspects of the mentoring process during the pandemic. Literature review served as the primary means of data collection, drawing insights from existing scholarly works to inform the understanding of the mentoring dynamics in the ODEL environment. The study adopted an interpretive paradigm, relying on the interpretation of findings from other scholars' research as well as extracting meaningful insights from the experiences shared in the literature. The analysis was also rooted in the interpretative lens or paradigm. Findings suggest that the unprecedented challenges caused by the pandemic had devastating long term implications on mentoring relationships in the broader discourse within the everchanging landscape of ODEL. Some of the challenges include the following, novice academics were left with no choice but to migrate to online or electronic platforms without the requisite knowledge, skills, literacy and relevant training as they grappled with their daily research activities, virtual platforms are dependent entirely on the access or availability of internet which was not the case. factors like lack of internet connectivity, absence of electricity, intermittent load shedding and limited access to essential infrastructure
