Author(s): Zdravko Jovanović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 166/2018

The First Epistle to the Corinthians of St Clement of Rome is one of the most ancient patristic documents from the body of texts of Christian literature. It reflects diversified theological and cultural issues from the turbulent transitional period, from the apostolic to the post-apostolic era of the primitive Christianity. What triggered the writing of the epistle was the unrest and upheaval in the Corinthian community of Christians caused by the illegitimate deposal of some of the local presbyters. In the epis tle, the subject of respect for the ecclesial structures and the hierarchical order is directly connected to the notion of the authentic faith. In this context, the present paper offers a presentation of an early Christian attitude of connecting the faith (πίστις) with a distinct ethos which the author of the Epistle illustrates by means of exegesis of paradigmatic Old and New Testament texts. The resolution of conflict, which is Clement’s primary goal, is reconstructed by means of examining his mode of combining the faith with works or with practical manifestation which implies sociological and not merely individual and intro spective connotations. A faith put in practice should unequivocally be manifested by the strive for concord and peace, by a practice of humility, gentleness, hospitality, obedience, and other virtues which build cohesion, instead of destruction, in the community of Christians. A contribution of the present paper is to be found mainly in the analysis of Clements’s theological interpretation of tension between faith and works which was prominent in the earliest New Testament and Patristic writings, but also in the contem porary theological thought as well.

Author(s): Tatsiana Kasataya / Language(s): Belarussian / Issue: 24/2016

The article discusses the main problems of the Soviet historiography of Evangelical Christian Baptists (ECB). State control, methodological and thematic constraints resulted in biased image of ECB in the Soviet society. Applied sociological and religious studies, which were part of religious policy and formed the image of believers in the official discourse, dominated in the research on this subject. Soviet historiography presents not only a source of studying state-religion relations, it contains a wealth of factual material on the activities of ECB in BSSR. Besides, the analysis of Soviet era research helps to get rid of many stereotypes and constraints in the formation of the modern Belarusian historiography.

Author(s): Boris Andreyevich Uspensky / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2008

Author(s): Natalia Mozghovaya / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 1/2020

The article is devoted to the analysis of such a spiritual phenomenon in the history of Russian philosophy as its spiritual-academic branch, represented in the ХІХ century by the scientific and pedagogical activity of philosophy professors of four academies of the Russian Empire: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Kazan. On the example of the Kiev and Moscow Academies, the unique features of this philosophy, manifested in the desire of their most prominent representatives P. Avsenev and F. Golubinskiy to combine elements of Orthodox “mysticism” with elements of European rationalist philosophy, have been considered. In the work of these representatives of spiritual and academic philosophy, mystical and scholastic traditions are combined. Both philosophers were distinguished by an extremely increased interest in mystical literature, in the sphere of everything irrational, in the phenomena of somnambulism, sleepwalking, and clairvoyance. They retained the glory of strange and mysterious thinkers. By virtue of the last argument, the author has turned to their work and tried to compare some features of their philosophical views.

Author(s): Radomir Popović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2019

The paper deals with one of the eighteen preserved homilies of St. Photius of Constantinople. Sermon of this holy Patriarch was told about 860 years, but the immediate cause was the attack the Russians at Constantinople. St. Patriarch is an eyewitness to this event and everything that happened before and after that, so that’s the homily, and there are two preserved – the third and fourth, that can be considered as an important historical source that informs about the beginnings of the relationship of Russians with Byzantium, and about Christianization of the Russians and southern Slavs. Translations of the Homily is very important because of the description of residents of the capital in the 9th century. Hence, the text and content of the homily have several layers and is very important as a primary theological and also historical source.

In this paper, the author studies the sources about the activity of Brun of Querfurt in Kiev. The narrative sources are well-known but on the basis of the new edition of the text it is possible to formulate new questions and give some new interpretations. But because of the few number of sources and short texts the results of these new analyses could be only hypotheses.

Author(s): Galia Simeonova-Konach / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 16/2016

The present paper is dedicated to the symbols of musical culture in semiotic and cultural discourse, as reflected by the category “cultural artefacts” (musical instruments) in the Bible. At the same time, it is as an attempt to demonstrate the literary critical and musicological potential of the problem. The category “musical instruments” in biblical texts has been discussed in a historical perspective. Another issue analysed in the paper are the rhythmic and metric structures of Byzantine and Bulgarian hymnography. Both these questions are viewed from the perspective of musical and poetical homology in Bulgarian symbolist poetry, specifically in the lyric poetry of Nikolay Liliev, and of the connections of Orthodox hymnography with broadly understood musicality of poetry.

Author(s): Metropolitan of Tetovo and Gostivar Yosif / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 2/2018

During the First Balkan War Vardar Macedonia was occupied by troops of the Kingdom of Serbia, to which it was formally annexed after the Second Balkan War under the signed peace treaty of Bucharest on July 28, 1913. The fall of Vardar Macedonia under Serbia’s authority immediately reflects on the church situation there, since without concern to the aspirations and attitudes of the Orthodox population in the newly acquired Macedonian lands, the Serbian Orthodox Church took control of the local eparchies. Both the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Bulgarian Exarchate do not recognize the administration of the Serbian Orthodox Church over Vardar Macedonia. They continue to regard these eparchies as part of their diocese. By imposing a regime of total repression, Serbia, along with the imposition of its state authority over Vardar Macedonia, also imposed the church power of the Serbian Orthodox Church, including the complete replacement of the clergy as well. The official recognition of the affiliation of the eparchies in Vardar Macedonia to the diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church became possible after World War I, in which Serbia fought as an ally on the side of the Entente what places it in a favorable position. In March 1920, as a result of the agreement reached with the Holy Synod of Constantinople Ecumenical Patriarchate a single autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church with the rank of Patriarchate was established. In February 1922, the Ecumenical Patriarch Meletius IV issued the necessary Patriarchal tomos for recognition of the Serbian Patriarchate and the accession of the eparchies of Vardar Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to it. The cost of this recognition is the large sum of 1.5 million gold francs paid to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the government in Belgrade.

One of the earliest notated sources of Christian music known today is the so called Ceramic plate from Preslav. It is a bilingual ceramic fragment (an ecclesiastical ostracon), a part of Sts. Cyril and Methodius’ liturgical heritage. A fragment of the plate was found in Preslav in 1930 during the excavations of a tomb near the Cathedral church and it is now kept in the State Archeological Museum in Sofia. According to the paleographic data it is from the late 9th - early 10th century when the famous Preslav ceramics has flourished. On the both sides of the Preslav ceramic plate there are incipits of liturgical texts: the verses of prokeimena. Most probably the Preslav ceramic plate represents a rare and important trace for the existence of Palaeobyzantine asmatikon, a prototype of the Russian melismatic Kondakarian practice and notation. There are similarities between the neumatic signs from the plate (Palaeobyzantine Chartres notation) and these from Russian Kondakarian notation. It is well known that the Palaeobyzantine asmatikon represents high level of professional chanting practice of Hagia Sophia Cathedral church in Constantinople. The Preslav ceramic plate testifies that most probably the same chanting practice has been in use in the Cathedral church of Preslav too. According to Elena Toncheva and Gregory Myers “at least some portion of the Hagia Sophia Typikon had been rendered in Old Bulgarian and used in a South Slavic center such as Preslav and possibly had been brought to Rus’ at the time of Christianization”. Few evidences with or without notation of Hagia Sophia Cathedral Rite (named ἀσματικὴ ἀκολουθία) used in Preslav gives a light at the Cyrillo-Methodian translation work on the same Typikon.

Author(s): Srećko Petrović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2019

Robert Hallowell Gardiner (1855–1924), Episcopalian layman and ecumenist, head of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, was one of the leaders of the early ecumenical movement. He was the first Secretary of Joint Commission on Faith and Order (established at XLIII General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1910). Gardiner organized first preliminary conference in New York in 1913, and he also helped organize preliminary world conference that gathered in Geneva in August 1920. Nikolaj Velimirović (1881–1956) was one of the most influential Serbian Orthodox thinkers and theologians in the 20th century. During his service as an orthodox theologian, Velimirović was working on supporting Christian unity. He established close connections to some Anglican and Catholic hierarchs, as well as to the representatives of other Churches. One of his friends and cooperators was R. Gardiner. Some letters of the correspondence between Velimirović and Gardiner can be found in WCC Archives in Geneva (Box 23.0.006). This correspondence took place between 1917 and 1922. In these material one can find some useful information for the study of life and work of Nicholai Velimirović, especially information regarding his participation in interChristian dialogue and regarding his contribution to the labour of international Ecumenical bodies. The earliest of these letters is Velimirović’s cablegram to Gardiner from July 21st 1917, regarding invitation of the Russian and Roman Catholic Church to take part in forthcoming World Conference on Faith and Order. Gardiner quoted that cablegram in a letter to John R. Mott, and also to some other relevant personalities. Another one is a letter which Velimirović sent to Gardiner on March 16th 1921, during his second visit to US, regarding their meeting. Gardiner later sent a letter to Velimirović on December 22nd in 1921, informing him that he met Velimirović’s friend Derocco, who arrived to US. The last letter preserved in WCC Archives, Box 23.0.006, is the one that Velimirović sent to Gardiner from Jerusalem, on May 12th 1922. In this last letter one can find Velimirović’s recommendation for Bishop Panteleimon of Jerusalem, who soon after that went to US and participated in the inter-Christian gatherings.

Church practice before Easter Pass under the shroud of Christ has two names and two explanations in Bulgarian culture. The people call this practice Pass under the table. For the Bulgarian Orthodox Church this ritual honours the work of Jesus Christ and his death. According to the people, the custom is done for health, luck and forgiveness of sins. The reasons for difference in the explanation of the ritualized action are sought in the traditional worldview and centuries-old practices of the Bulgarian people.

The adoption of Christianity as the dominant form of the religious world perception was the basis for fundamental changes in the field of socioeconomic, political, and spiritual life of the peoples of Central and Western Europe. This study is a reflection of the results of the scientific research on the problem of how the indicated transformations are conveyed in the culture and art of the period from the 12th to 14th centuries. The main tendencies of European perception of the hero image during the pagan era were singled out on the basis of the materials obtained during the analysis of texts from such sources as English church chronicles, Irish folklore, Scandinavian sagas, and other works of scaldic poetry. A wide range of general scientific and specialized methods and techniques necessary for the analysis of archaeographic data were used. The scientific relevance and novelty of the study lies in the fact that it represents an attempt to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the selected sources on the history of the German-Scandinavian peoples in the early and high Middle Ages. At the moment, an increased attention to the culture and life of the peoples of Northern Europe in the Middle Ages has taken place, both among humanitarian professionals and among non-specialists. In this regard, this work has a certain theoretical and practical significance for representatives of various humanitarian scientific disciplines – history, sociology, anthropology, religious studies, etc., as well as representatives of those research practices whose activities are directly or indirectly related to the study sociocultural background of the European Middle Ages.

With the occurrence of Christianity as a religious model, a new culture of living emerged in the social movements and relations. This milestone was marked at the beginning of the new world era projecting the tradition of the Christian civilization for over two millenniums and two decades. The affirmation of the spiritual distance from the Judean and pagan philosophy and culture took a very long period of time after the first three-century-long establishment of Christianity. However, it is during this so-called Apostolic Age that the books of the New Testament Bible were produced and recognized as canonical, which laid the foundation for the oral Christian tradition and teaching. The perseverance and avant-garde of Christian religious beliefs and philosophical systematization gradually opened an ideological void in Roman society, and the dominant pagan world had found itself in a disastrous phase of moral and ideological erosion. New revived spiritual and ideological tendencies have influenced the announcement of the political collapse of the Roman Empire and the departure from history of the already long-gone Roman civilization and culture. Prior to the new era which stressed the need for interpretation of ideas, it was only Christianity that could satisfy the ideal of interpersonal equality and a more peaceful life in the future world of diversity and similarity.

Author(s): Dragan M. Todorović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 3/2011

After the end of the unity of the Western church at the beginning of the 16th century, the reformation movement of returning to Evangelical ideals of Christian collectiveness arrived inevitably to the area of the Balkans. The spectrum of churches belonging to the reformation heritage with different doctrines, relying upon the agency of the first medieval heretic movements (Waldenses, Bogomils, Hussites, Hutterites, Unitarians), endeavoured with varying success to grow in the reformation oriented aristocracy and wider peasantry in the South Slavic countries.

Author(s): Aleksandr M. Smirnov / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 2/2010

In the Western Caucasus, the number of dolmens is counted as many as some thousand pieces. Most of them were discovered without any remnants of original burial contents. Massiveness of these constructions, openness for access from outside together with absence of any traces of burials survived inside — all this forced scholars to conclude the dolmens were erected as collective tombs and were plundered afterwards. But all these suppositions strongly contradict with the specifics of their construction — the portholes are placed in them too low to serve as entrances for collective tombs; then, there is absolute absence of any human bones outside dolmens that might be thrown away by hypothetical robbers. Now, I put forward the idea of the successive replacement of burials into dolmens. Moreover, instead of the idea of collective tomb which in the end of their functioning was filled possibly up its capstone, I prove that dolmen must be empty as the final result of its functioning. This paper is based on comparison of certain compositions in the megalithic art of Europe with corresponding images in the art of Ancient Near East. As to megalithic tombs, it deals with two compositional patterns, one of which includes a female deity or her attributes and a grille-like structure; the other one — pairs of ungulates and grille-figures. The latter has direct analogies in glyptic of Mesopotamia. These are scenes with pairs of ungulates standing before reed (hence grille-looking) stalls, which are the temples of the goddess Nintur, the deity of childbirth. These compositions are representations of giving birth to posterity where the temple itself acts as ‘uterus’ bringing newborn animals into the world, being not a living thing at the same time. Similar scenes engraved in megalithic tombs, like representations of female deities and grille-structures figured there, perhaps witness possession by these burial constructions of the same temple functions. So, as a result, in the periods of time when the process of inhumation and following birth-giving was not put into effect, these huge monuments were empty, imitating thus the same condition of ‘uterus’ between recurrent pregnancies. So, such funeral ideology of dolmens demonstrates actual realization of the idea shared widely both in antiquity and in recent time that “which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die” (I Cor: 15, 36).
